British Prime Minister Andy Burnham has placed the renewal of the UK’s Trident nuclear deterrent at the heart of his government’s defence and economic agenda, announcing a new £8.4 billion phase of contracts for the Dreadnought nuclear submarine programme. He made the announcement during his visit to Barrow-in-Furness, home to BAE Systems’ submarine shipyard, where the UK’s next-generation Dreadnought-class ballistic missile submarines are being built to replace the ageing Vanguard-class fleet. The £8.4 billion package forms part of the wider £31 billion Dreadnought programme, which Downing Street said will support 18,000 additional jobs in the nuclear defence sector by 2030 and create 22,000 apprenticeships by 2035.Burnham described Trident renewal as the cornerstone of Britain’s defence strategy, arguing that military investment should also deliver long-term economic benefits.“Keeping this country safe is the first responsibility of any government, but security is not only about what we build; it is about who builds it, and who benefits from it,” Burnham said.He further stated that the investment would help create opportunities for young people while supporting the government’s vision of a reindustrialised Britain.Trident nuclear deterrentThe Trident nuclear deterrent is the United Kingdom’s sea-based nuclear weapons system and forms the cornerstone of its national security strategy. It is based on a policy of continuous at-sea deterrence (CASD), under which at least one Royal navy ballistic missile submarine remains on patrol at all times, carrying Trident II D5 submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs) armed with UK-designed nuclear warheads. The current Vanguard-class submarines, which entered service in the 1990s, are approaching the end of their operational life. They are being replaced by the Dreadnought-class submarines, which are expected to enter service in early 2030s.Measuring around 153 metres in length and displacing approximately 17,200 tonnes, the Dreadnought-class will be the largest submarines ever built for the Royal Navy. It will be powered by the PWR3 nuclear reactor, they are designed to operate for decades without reactor refuelling. The Dreadnought-class submarine is equipped with 12 launch tubes for Trident II D5 SLBMs, reduced from the Vanguard class’s 16 tubes but capable of carrying the UK’s full operational nuclear deterrent under current policy. The submarines are also armed with 533 mm torpedo tubes for Spearfish heavyweight torpedoes, providing a conventional self-defence capability against enemy submarines and surface vessels.Designed with next-generation stealth technologies, an advanced acoustic quieting system, improved sonar and sensors, and the new PWR3 nuclear reactor, the Dreadnought class is expected to be significantly quieter, more survivable and harder to detect than its predecessor
