AHMEDABAD: A sharp increase in deportation proceedings across the United States has also affected Indian nationals, with immigration judges issuing removal orders against 801 Indians in June 2026, according to the latest data compiled by the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC).While the number of Indians ordered removed was slightly lower than the 840 recorded in May, the nationwide pace of deportation rulings accelerated significantly.
Overall removal orders climbed from 58,339 in May to 78,882 in June, marking a nearly 30% increase in just one month and indicating a faster disposal of immigration cases by US courts.The figures are based on millions of Immigration Court records obtained by TRAC under the Freedom of Information Act from the Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR), the US Justice Department agency that administers immigration courts.TRAC noted that the statistics represent the most serious removal charge filed in each case and should not be interpreted as the final legal outcome, as some cases may still be subject to appeals or other proceedings.For Indian migrants, many of whom originate from Gujarat and Punjab, the data point to sustained enforcement by US immigration authorities. Deportation proceedings are civil in nature and are initiated by the Department of Homeland Security through agencies including Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Customs and Border Protection (CBP), and US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). The process generally begins with a Notice to Appear, after which an immigration judge determines whether an individual should be allowed to remain in the country or be removed.Although India’s figure remains far below those of countries in Latin America, it stands out because India is the only Asian nation to record such a substantial number of removal orders in the June data. Mexico accounted for the highest number of removal orders at 15,773, followed by Venezuela with 10,939, Honduras with 9,686 and Guatemala with 8,340.Immigration courts are administrative tribunals established by the US Congress to adjudicate deportation cases brought by the Department of Homeland Security. The latest figures suggest that the courts are disposing of cases at a much faster pace as immigration enforcement intensifies across multiple nationalities, including Indians awaiting decisions on their legal status in the United States.
