Meet Franz Lozano Jr., the Texas student who returned to education after more than a decade away; he is now part of a national award-winning student organisation recognised for leadership, service and community engagement
The national conference offered students an opportunity to exchange ideas with aspiring educators from across the country while attending workshops focused on recruitment, advocacy and issues affecting students and educators

Returning to college after more than a decade away can be daunting enough. For Franz Lozano Jr., it became the beginning of an unexpected leadership journey. A biomedical equipment technology student at San Jacinto College, Lozano returned to education after serving in the U.S. Army and working in industrial fields. He eventually reconnected with learning while also helping shape conversations around education and the people who make it possible. According to a news report by the San Jacinto College, Lozano’s path into advocacy began almost by accident. Encouraged by a friend, Lozano joined the Texas State Teachers Association of Aspiring Educators, despite not studying to become a teacher. What started as an extracurricular commitment soon became a space where he could develop his leadership skills, meet fellow students and find new ways to serve his community. Scroll down to read his interesting journey.

From local projects to national recognition

The San Jacinto College chapter has now earned national attention, receiving the National Outstanding Community College Chapter Award at the National Education Association Aspiring Educators Conference in Denver, states the news report. The award recognises student organisations that demonstrate leadership, service, professional development and meaningful community engagement. Five San Jacinto students, including Lozano, represented the chapter at the conference alongside Alexis Gonzalez, Lilly Maldonado, Alexandra Martinez and Jordan Potter, adds the report. The recognition reflects work that begins much closer to home. Students have participated in initiatives designed to make a tangible difference in their communities, including the Kindness Project, which involved creating messages of encouragement for cancer patients, senior citizens and children in hospitals and care facilities. They also developed grant-writing skills and secured funding to establish a garden club at a local elementary school, turning classroom learning into community action.

Finding a voice through service

For Lozano, the organisation has become more than a student activity. His involvement has helped him understand the connection between education, public policy and government, eventually leading him towards advocacy for students and future educators, explains the report. He has since risen to become president of the Central Campus chapter and state vice president of the Texas State Teachers Association of Aspiring Educators. His choice of biomedical equipment technology also reflects a practical desire to combine technical skills with service. The programme offered hands-on learning while allowing him to work in a field that ultimately helps people. His involvement with TSTA-AE gave that instinct for service another dimension.

Learning beyond the classroom

The national conference offered students an opportunity to exchange ideas with aspiring educators from across the country while attending workshops focused on recruitment, advocacy and issues affecting students and educators. For some, the trip also represented a rare chance to travel beyond familiar surroundings and experience a national professional community firsthand. That momentum continued after the conference with San Jacinto College’s first TSTA-AE Leadership Retreat, held on August 29 at the Central Campus. The programme focused on strengthening leadership, communication and relationship-building skills. As per the online report, Lozano’s journey illustrates how returning to education can lead somewhere entirely unexpected. What began as a second chapter in his own academic life has evolved into an opportunity to help others find their voices, serve their communities and see how even small acts of leadership can contribute to something much larger.Images Courtesy: istock and San Jacinto College
