Travis Kelce was supposed to be riding off into the sunset; instead, he’s climbing the NFL record book | NFL News
Travis Kelce caught only two passes in Las Vegas on Sunday, but that was enough to move past a Hall of Famer. The Kansas City tight end entered the game tied with Tim Brown at 1,094 career receptions, then took sole possession of seventh place in the first half. The Chiefs beat the Raiders 30-27 to stay unbeaten at 4-0. Kelce finished with 15 yards on four targets, a quiet stat line on a night that carried real weight. He turned 37 the next day, in a season many thought would never happen.
Travis Kelce is climbing the NFL record book fast
Seventh place is only the start, and the names just ahead are close. Cris Carter is sixth with 1,101 catches. Marvin Harrison is fifth with 1,102. By my count, Kelce now sits at 1,096, five catches behind Carter and six behind Harrison. Four catches a game, which is roughly his pace this year, would put both behind him within two weeks.Jason Witten is another matter. He is fourth with 1,228. Catching him this year would take roughly 130 more receptions, and Kelce’s best season ever is 110. That chase belongs to 2027, if there is one. There is a second record in play, and it says more about how he plays than any total does. Jason Kelce used his ESPN segment on Monday to point out that his younger brother passed Marshall Faulk, Terrell Owens and Steve Smith to take the career lead in yards after the catch. It is “hard to even fathom,” Jason said. Yards after the catch comes down to balance and nerve, and Kelce has kept both at 37.
Fewer catches, still a problem for defenses
The Vegas box score tells a different story from the record book. Four targets. Two catches. Fifteen yards. On its own, that line could feed worry about a fading star. In context, it looks like the price of a game Kansas City won on the ground.Kenneth Walker ran for 177 yards on 22 carries and scored twice, and his 76-yard run on the final play of the third quarter turned the game. Kansas City gained 189 yards on the ground as a team and Patrick Mahomes threw only 30 times, with both of his touchdown passes going to Thornton. The Raiders did contain Kelce. They could not contain everything else. That balance may be helping him. Through three games, before Vegas, Kelce had 14 catches on 18 targets for 231 yards and two touchdowns, a catch rate near 78 percent. Six targets a game is not a workhorse load, and he is catching most of them.
What the next two weeks could settle
Retirement talk has followed Kelce since January, and nothing has quieted it. Coverage of the Vegas trip called this his 14th and possibly final season. He has not said anything official. His life off the field has shifted too. He married Taylor Swift at Madison Square Garden in July, and Swift has missed Kansas City’s road games so far because of an SNL appearance and the VMAs. Whether she makes the trip to Seattle on Oct. 25 is unknown.Kansas City hosts the Chargers on Oct. 18. Kelce needs five catches to pass Carter. The home crowd could see it happen.
