Whisenant gained national attention in October 2024 when he and South Lake Tahoe climber Brant Hysell completed the Lurking Fear route on El Capitan in 2 hours, 55 minutes and 32 seconds. Climbing magazine Gripped reported that the ascent broke the previous speed record held by Yuji Hirayama and Nick Fowler, a mark that had stood as one of the benchmarks in the sport.That record did not come without buildup. Whisenant and Hysell had already climbed the same route in just over four hours two days earlier, a pace that showed how quickly they were refining their approach before the record attempt.He kept pushing after that. In May, the Yosemite Climbing Association reported that Whisenant and fellow climber Noah Fox climbed The Nose, another of El Capitan’s marquee routes, twice in a single day, finishing the double ascent in 14 hours and 38 minutes. The Nose is considered one of the classic big-wall climbs in Yosemite, and completing it twice in one push demands a level of sustained endurance few climbers attempt.Those achievements had turned Whisenant into a rising figure in Yosemite’s increasingly competitive speed-climbing scene, one still absorbing the news that one of its fastest climbers is gone.
