David Friedberg disagrees with everyone predicting ‘radically failure’ for Zohran Mamdani’s grocery stores

Venture capitalist David Friedberg has pushed back against predictions that New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s planned municipal grocery store initiative will immediately fail. The tech investor argued that the heavily subsidised locations will prove wildly popular with consumers in the short term before creating broader economic strains.Speaking on a recent episode of The All-In Podcast (via Business Insider), Friedberg challenged critics who expect the government-backed grocers to collapse right away, predicting that lower prices will drive massive foot traffic and spark similar municipal demands across the country.

‘Zohran Mamdani’s plan will outperform commercial giants in short term’

Under Mayor Mamdani’s plan, New York City has set aside $70 million to establish five city-owned grocery stores (one in each borough) with the first location scheduled to open in the Bronx in 2027. The stores aim to offer a 30% discount on essential food items, including fresh produce, meat and dairy products. Friedberg emphasised that as taxpayers absorb the operational deficits, the stores will easily undercut traditional commercial retailers on price.“Everyone’s got it a little bit wrong in assuming that this thing is going to radically fail. They’re going to outperform Whole Foods. They’re going to outperform Safeway. They’re going to outperform Albertsons. They’re going to be so in demand that what will end up happening is that over the next 24 months, every other city in America will look to these grocery stores and say, ‘We want the same’,” Friedberg said.However, Friedberg warned that short-term popularity masks severe long-term financial consequences, comparing government-subsidised retail to a economic spiral where taxpayers eventually foot the bill for rising inflation and operational losses.“A big part of the multi-level marketing scheme of socialism is to create spectacle. And it will create more spectacle that will help to fuel the multi-level marketing scheme of socialism. And remember, the problem with all multi-level marketing schemes at the end of the day is someone has to pay the bill,” Friedberg added.

Mamdani’s proposal has faced sharp criticism from private grocery executives and commercial operators.
