Jeff Bezos and his wife allowed their kids to play with knives at the age of 4: Why ‘resourcefulness’ in kids needs to be inculcated early
Jeff Bezos advocates for children to engage in risky play, believing it builds essential resourcefulness. He shared that his own childhood on a ranch taught him problem-solving skills. Allowing children to handle tools and face challenges prepares them for future endeavors. Experts suggest this hands-off approach can lead to greater confidence and resilience. Overparenting, conversely, may negatively impact children’s mental well-being later in life.

For years, parents have pointed out dangerous objects and warned their children not to use them, signalling harm if they do. From lighters to knives, kids are warned from a young age about the harms of all things harmful. Many parents even follow the trend of baby-proofing their homes to ensure that their children are safe at all times. However, when it comes to Jeff Bezos and his former wife Mackenzie Scott, the couple let their kids play with knives at the age of four and with power tools since the age of 7 or 8. Why, exactly?Because allowing them to take risks and be self-reliant teaches resourcefulness, a key trait in both business and daily life, as per the Amazon founder. Back in 2017, Bezos was speaking at the SummitLA panel with his brother Mark Bezos, when he said that being resourceful is a skill he learned as a kid and one he and his wife had instilled in their children, ages 12 to 17. His wife’s rationale, as per Bezos was that she “would much rather have a kid with nine fingers than a resourceless kid,” which he said is a “fantastic attitude about life.”

How do you teach children about money and financial responsibility?

A self-independent childhood

As the billionaire said himself, he grew up in the midst of the world rather than protected against it. Every summer until he was 16, Bezos visited his grandfather’s ranch “in the middle of nowhere.” When things around the farm broke down, he said, his grandfather couldn’t just call someone to fix them. Instead, the man would repair the items himself, with the assistance of his grandson, Bezos. Together they fixed heavy machinery, performed veterinary work on his cattle and even built a house one summer.“He would take on major projects that he didn’t know how to do and then figure out how to do them,” says Bezos. “As a kid, I got to see him solve all these problems and be a real problem-solver.”

An enriched future

The billionaire explained that learning to be resourceful at a young age helped him immensely in his business, particularly at Amazon

The billionaire explained that learning to be resourceful at a young age helped him immensely in his business, particularly at Amazon where he faced numerous failures many times and was forced to take huge risks. In his first annual letter to Amazon shareholders in 1997, the CEO wrote, “Given a 10% chance of a 100-times payout, you should take that bet every time.”For instance, Amazon Marketplace, a platform for third-party sellers on Amazon.com, took three iterations before becoming a profitable business. Bezos first launched Amazon Auctions, similar to eBay’s business model, which ended up being a complete failure. He then created Z-shops, which also tanked. Finally, his third try led to Amazon Marketplace, which he says “started working right away” and now accounts for nearly half the units sold on Amazon.com. Though each one of these failures lasted over a year, says the CEO, his resourcefulness and willingness to try new things paid off in the end.“Each one of those times that you have a setback and you back up and you try again,” said Bezos, “you’re using resourcefulness, you’re using self-reliance, you’re trying to invent your way out of a box.” Luckily, said the businessman, he has kids who have learned to be resourceful and most importantly, “who so far have all their fingers.”

Is this the right way of parenting?

There are parents like Bezos who let their kids have their own experiences in life, by hurting and learning. Then there are the helicopter parents who want to hold their children’s hands through every step ahead. Which is better?Well, if experts are to be consulted, then Bezos’ approach to parenting is a healthy one for kids, provided they do not seriously harm themselves. Overparenting, on the other hand, may set kids up for failure. A 2015 research study published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, said that dangerous play can improve physical health, social skills and help kids learn to gauge risks at a young age. It’s also been found to make kids more confident and resilient.“Importantly, it’s not up to parents or experts to decide what is risky play for a particular child,” Mariana Brussoni, associate professor of pediatrics at the University of British Columbia, wrote in The Conversation. “Rather, children need to be given the mental and physical space to figure out appropriate risk levels for themselves: far enough that it feels exhilarating, but not so far that it becomes too scary.“On the contrary, kids with helicopter parents tend to face greater rates of mental health issues later in life, as per a report in SLATE. As Bezos told his brother, the value of being a little more hands-off is that when kids inevitably hurt themselves, the moment becomes a learning opportunity. It instils in kids what Lythcott-Haims calls “self-efficacy,” or the mindset that they control their own life.
