A hiking trip in north-central Pennsylvania turned into a rescue mission when a 102-pound dog became too exhausted to make it back down the mountain. What could have ended badly instead became a story of quick thinking, community help, and a very determined effort to get one beloved hiking companion home safely. Here’s what really happened:

A hike that took an unexpected turn

Kevin Matthews was out on the Golden Eagle Trail with Sable, his 9-year-old Tibetan mastiff and German shepherd mix, when he realised something was wrong, as per reports. The pair were used to long walks and tough trails, so at first he thought she might just need a break. Sable had been his regular hiking partner for years, and Matthews said she loved their Sunday hikes so much that she would get excited if he skipped them.On July 12, the two set out on what was meant to be a challenging but manageable 10-mile hike. Around halfway through, Matthews noticed that Sable was panting heavily. The trail was strenuous, he said, though they had completed similarly demanding hikes before, even ones stretching up to 20 miles. For a while, water seemed to help and she appeared to recover. But the relief did not last. Not long after, Sable began struggling to walk. The two turned back and started heading down the trail, but progress was painfully slow. She would move a few steps, then sit down again. By around 4 p.m., Matthews found himself stranded without cell service and unsure of what to do next, reports suggest.

A difficult decision

At that point, Matthews had to make one of the hardest choices any pet owner could face in the outdoors: stay with Sable and risk both of them getting stuck, or leave her in place and run for help. He chose the second option, but not before doing everything he could to keep her safe.He stacked rocks around her resting spot on the embankment, hoping she would remain there until someone could reach them. Then he started running down the mountain. It was not just a dog to him. Matthews said Sable had been his hiking companion for a long time, and their bond made the situation even more emotional. He ran about two miles to the road below the mountain, where he managed to flag down a passing car and explain what had happened, as per reports.By chance, the driver was connected to the Waterville Volunteer Fire Company. That one encounter set a rescue operation in motion.

Volunteers answered immediately

After hearing the situation, Tiffany Young, a volunteer firefighter, and her husband, who is the fire chief, did not hesitate. They stopped what they were doing, put on their boots, and headed out to help.Soon, Young and her husband were joined by Matthews, a forest ranger, and another volunteer firefighter. Together, they hiked back up the mountain to find Sable exactly where Matthews had left her. For Matthews, seeing her still there brought immediate relief. The rescuers knew they would have to be careful. Sable was far too heavy and too weak to be moved quickly by hand, so they used a Reeves stretcher, normally reserved for injured people. It took teamwork to get her down the trail. In wider sections, four people carried the stretcher together. Where the trail narrowed, only two could manage it, and the group had to switch off repeatedly to avoid strain.Young said Sable was clearly in a very lethargic state, and the descent was slow and demanding. The team had to stop often and move cautiously to make sure the dog stayed safe during the long trip down the mountain.

Four hours to safety

The rescue took about four hours from start to finish. That included the long, careful journey down the mountain with repeated breaks. For everyone involved, the goal was simple: get Sable to the bottom alive. When they finally reached the trailhead, Matthews was overwhelmed. Young said he cried tears of joy and kept trying to offer money to buy everyone dinner. Instead, the rescuers shared hugs and relief after a long afternoon of physical effort and emotional stress. For Young, the mission was unusual. She said that in her three decades as a volunteer firefighter, calls often involve injured or stranded hikers, but rarely animals. Still, she and her husband were glad to help. Both are dog owners themselves, and they understood the instinct to do whatever it takes for a pet in trouble.

What happened to Sable

Once the rescue was over, Matthews began thinking about why Sable had struggled so suddenly. He thought that Sable had become exhausted by overexerting herself. But after examining her he realised that she had sprained her front right leg while hiking, he told The Washington Post. He initially thought of taking her to the vet, who was four hours away from where they were staying for hike, but he later changed his plan as Sable was now “acting normal” and her health seems to be improving.

A rescue remembered

Matthews said he will always be grateful to the volunteers who gave up their time to help him and his dog. What began as a peaceful outdoor outing became a reminder of how quickly conditions can change on a mountain trail, especially when a large dog becomes unable to continue. For Matthews, the most important outcome was simple: Sable made it home safely. For the volunteers, it was another example of community service at its best, even if the rescue was not the kind they usually expect.
