Stephen Curry reveals how his wife Ayesha Curry reacted to massive $20 million pay cut in Warriors contract extension | NBA News
A $20 million pay cut is a hard thing to bring home. Stephen Curry took one in the Warriors extension, signing for roughly that much less than the top figure, and he had to tell his wife, Ayesha, about it.In an interview with ABC7 News Bay Area, Curry took on the idea that the decision must have been stressful. He pointed to gratitude, the odd scale of NBA money and the first contract he ever signed. Then he explained why the whole household is aligned.
Stephen Curry explains how Ayesha Curry reacted to the $20 million pay cut
Stephen Curry told Ayesha he would be taking something of a pay cut for the rest of his time with the Warriors, and he later described how the conversation went to ABC7 News Bay Area. The interview was reported on Friday, October 2.What came through was agreement. When the talk turned to Ayesha and the rest of the family, Curry said “everybody’s on the same page” about the part of the situation he can control. He did not quote her directly in the portion that has been reported. In practical terms, the pay cut means the guard accepted less than the most he could have been paid. The $20 million is the gap between that ceiling and the extension. Curry says the family sees it his way.He also shrank the question. People ask whether a decision like this stressed him out, Curry said, and his answer leaned on gratitude and understanding. The figures in the NBA, from team valuations to the salary cap to max deals, can feel unreal, he admitted. “’Oh, you stressed out about the decision,’ and all that–the gratitude and understanding, the numbers we’re talking about, and of course there’s team valuations and the salary cap, max numbers and all,” the Warriors veteran shared.Curry started with the odd economics of the league, moved to his first contract, then to his family, and finished on the court. Each step came back to what he can control.
Curry ties the Warriors extension to his first NBA contract
To explain how he thinks about money, Curry went back to the beginning. His first contract was worth $44 million, at about $11 million a season, and he said this decision traces back to it. “It goes back to my very first contract, the $11 million, the four for $44 million that I signed. You sign contracts based on information that you have and what you feel like is right.”A player signs a contract based on the information available and on what feels right at the time, he said. The instinct behind that first signing is the one he cites now. By that standard, the extension is one more call made with the facts he has.The destination is just as clear in his words. Curry said he wants to stay with the Golden State Warriors and close this chapter the right way, with his family sharing that outlook.
