Meta wants companies, not just advertisers, to pay for its AI. The Facebook and Instagram parent has launched Meta Enterprise Platform, a new business line that will sell its AI models, agents and coding tools to businesses. The move puts Meta in direct competition with Microsoft and Google for corporate technology budgets.To run it, Mark Zuckerberg has hired Chirantan “CJ” Desai, who until Monday was CEO and President of database company MongoDB. Desai joins as Chief Enterprise Platform Officer and reports directly to Zuckerberg. “We believe superintelligence will create significant new opportunities for all people and businesses,” Zuckerberg said, calling the unit “the next major pillar of our business.”The exit caught MongoDB off guard. Its shares fell more than 17% on the news, and the board has brought back Dev Ittycheria, who led the company from 2014 to 2025, as interim CEO while it searches for a permanent replacement.
Meta Enterprise Platform will sell Muse, Business Agent and Muse Code to companies
The platform will initially bundle the Muse agent, Meta Business Agent, Muse API and Muse Code for businesses and developers. The timing leans heavily on Muse, the personal AI agent Meta launched on September 8. It can send emails and book travel, and it reached the top of the US App Store and Google Play Store within two weeks. Market intelligence firm Sensor Tower estimates it crossed 3.4 million downloads by September 24.Meta Business Agent, announced in June, already answers customer queries, books appointments and closes sales on WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger. In August, Meta also released a coding model priced close to lower-cost Chinese open-weight rivals. What Meta has not shared yet is pricing, availability timelines or the admin controls a company would get.
Meta’s $600 billion AI bill needs revenue beyond ads
Meta is spending more than $100 billion on AI infrastructure this year alone, and Zuckerberg expects to spend $600 billion over the next two years. That appetite has made investors nervous. The stock dropped 10% in after-hours trading in July after Meta raised its spending forecast. Muse’s success reversed some of that, with shares rising more than 10% last week.Enterprise contracts could offer steadier revenue than consumer subscriptions, which Meta is still trying to sell to Facebook and Instagram users. Desai said that “security and privacy are built into Meta’s enterprise products from the outset,” a claim businesses will want to test before handing an agent access to company data.
Meta’s earlier workplace tools shut down, while Microsoft and Google have a head start
This is not Meta’s first attempt at selling to companies. Workplace, its internal communication tool launched in 2016, crossed seven million paid subscribers by 2021 but shut down in May 2026. Horizon Workrooms, its VR meeting app, closed in February.The competition is also tougher now. Microsoft redesigned Copilot last week with an autonomous agent that keeps working after employees log off, while Google has years of Workspace and cloud relationships. Coding tools such as Claude Code, Codex and Cursor already have loyal enterprise users.Desai’s resume is Meta’s answer to that gap. He spent nearly eight years at ServiceNow, rising to President and COO, and led product and engineering at Cloudflare. Meta has the models and the reach. Whether it can become a company businesses trust for the long haul will depend on the terms it offers next.
