‘Look at this Indian’: University of Florida student says he was harassed, abused, ‘I was genuinely fearing for my life’
A University of Florida student has posted a video of another student harassing him on the road near the university campus, calling him names and hurling homophobic slurs on him. Posting the video on the university’s unofficial subReddit group, the student sought help in identifying the harasser who was seen recording the student.The incident took place earlier this month and UF Public Safety listed an incident on September 17 as a ‘hate crime’ assault incident.“On Thursday at midnight, I was coming back from Marston, stopped by to grab a bite from Wawa, and was walking back to campus when a person approached me. He pulled out his phone and started a selfie recording, saying, “Look at this Indian, this jeet, this fa**ot.” I tried walking away, but he continued following, calling me slurs. When I tried crossing the street, he stood right in front of me, got closer and pushed me with force causing me to stumble backwards,” the Reddit post read.“Afterwards, I started speedwalking and he continued following me saying, “Lets see what’s in his backpack.” He tried reaching for it, but I swung it out the way. Now I started recording for my safety, he continued calling me slurs, telling me to “kill myself.” He was impersonating someone from Theta Chi in the video,” he said.“Right before he assaulted me, I was genuinely fearing for my life, and he prevented me from walking away,” he said.As seen in the video, the student too started recording when the harasser started abusing him and the harasser got triggered by this. The harasser also revealed his name in the video but it is not verified whether it’s his real name.Redditors said in the comment section that the incident was reported to the school and the harasser was also identified.
