'I can't afford a house': 25-year-old Gen Z techie earning Rs 1.8 lakh a month says Bengaluru's housing prices have humbled him

A 25-year-old cybersecurity professional earning Rs 1.8 lakh a month in Bengaluru says he was “humbled” by housing prices after discovering that even a Rs 1.3 crore budget may not be enough for the kind of home he wants. For the young professional, buying a home initially appeared to be a realistic goal. Coming from a middle-class family, he said he has always been careful about his spending and does not spend heavily on lifestyle expenses. He chooses to ride a scooter to work instead of buying a car and currently lives alone in a paying guest accommodation. He said his monthly living expenses come to around Rs 31,000. At the same time, he invests Rs 75,000 every month through a systematic investment plan, assuming a return of around 10 per cent, while keeping the remaining amount in his savings account. With his income and relatively frugal lifestyle, he began thinking that a property worth around Rs 1.3 crore could give him a reasonable home. That expectation changed after he contacted a broker and started visiting properties. The man said he looked at homes in Bengaluru’s Indiranagar and Whitefield areas and was surprised by what his budget could actually buy. “The problem is, in 1.3 crore, the house I am getting is like a 2 BHK. It is made like a matchbox in some random standalone building, but in a good area,” he said. He also pointed out that larger gated communities can cost considerably more. “The big society, like with 800-900 flats in a gated community, even in Pune, is crossing Rs 2 crore plus like a real good flat,” he said. For someone in his mid-20s, the discovery has raised a larger question about whether a high salary is enough to make home ownership achievable in India’s major cities.

Should he keep saving or take a loan?

The experience has left the young professional questioning whether he should continue living a highly cost-conscious lifestyle for several more years before purchasing a home. “Should I continue living like this on a cost-cutting life for another five years and grow my portfolio and then get some loan to actually afford that expensive house?” he asked. He also said he currently has no plans to get married before turning 30, leaving him more flexibility to focus on building his finances. His dilemma reflects a challenge faced by many young professionals. A salary that may appear substantial on paper can feel very different when compared with property prices in India’s major technology and employment hubs. For buyers, the cost of a home is also not limited to the advertised property price. A purchase can involve a substantial down payment, registration and stamp duty, maintenance costs, furnishing expenses and, in the case of a loan, years of interest payments. That makes the decision between continuing to invest and buying immediately particularly significant. At the same time, a Rs 1.3 crore property does not necessarily mean the same thing in every neighbourhood. Location, size, age of the building, amenities and connectivity can dramatically affect prices.

Gen Z’s housing frustration strikes a wider chord

The young man’s experience resonated with social media users, many of whom said buying a home in a major Indian city has become increasingly difficult for younger professionals without substantial savings or family support. One user responded: “A fellow 25M professional here. In my opinion, there’s a reason most people buy their house only after 35-40, once they have enough savings.” Another suggested that India’s housing market may remain expensive unless there is a major economic disruption. The discussion also reflected a growing generational frustration. One commenter wrote: “It is so damn true. It feels like us, Gen Z and middle-class people, can’t even afford a house in big cities. It’s for the rich only.”Another user offered a more reassuring perspective, writing: “My heart goes out for Gen Z. As a millennial, I’ve seen bad times but Gen Z is having a real challenge at hand. But you guys will be fine, you’ll figure it out.” The story ultimately raises a question larger than whether one 25-year-old should buy a house now. For young Indians earning relatively good salaries, the traditional milestones of adulthood are increasingly being weighed against soaring urban housing costs. For this cybersecurity professional, the calculation is still open. For now, he has investments, savings and a stable income, but buying the home he considers worthwhile may require more patience, a larger loan or a significant change in expectations. His experience also highlights an important reality: earning well does not automatically mean being able to afford the kind of home you want in India’s most expensive cities.
