For nearly a century, the Kennedy family’s sprawling compound in Hyannis Port, Massachusetts, has been more than a summer retreat.Set along the waterfront of Cape Cod, the property has hosted generations of Kennedys, witnessed key moments in American political history and offered the family a private place to celebrate, compete and grieve, the New York Post reported. The compound’s lawns and private pier became familiar backdrops to images of the family sailing on Nantucket Sound, swimming off the Cape Cod coast and playing fiercely competitive games of touch football. Those photographs helped shape the idyllic “Camelot” image associated with the Kennedy dynasty. As summer draws to a close, the historic property once again offers a glimpse into the family’s private world—and the real estate that has remained closely linked to its public legacy.

How the Kennedys found Hyannis Port

The family’s connection to Hyannis Port began with golf. In 1926, Joseph P Kennedy, already a millionaire, began looking for a home near a golf club. He reportedly explored membership at Cohasset Country Club on Massachusetts’ South Shore but was turned away, allegedly because of his Irish Catholic faith, the Post reported. The Kennedys later discovered Hyannisport Club on Cape Cod, which was then run by an Irish Catholic. The family rented Malcolm Cottage before Joseph Kennedy purchased the property in 1928 for $25,000, according to the JFK Museum in Hyannis. The original three-acre property stood on a dead-end street facing Nantucket Sound. Over time, it grew into a multigenerational waterfront compound that became one of the most recognisable family estates in the United States.

A waterfront estate built for family life

Joseph Kennedy expanded the main residence, known as the Big House, into a sprawling home reportedly featuring 21 rooms, 12 bedrooms, a steam room and a 50-person theatre in the basement. The grounds included a tennis court, swimming pool and open lawns where the Kennedy children played touch football. The waterfront location also made sailing, swimming and boating central to family life.In 1956, John F. Kennedy purchased a house behind his father’s residence. It later became known as the President’s House. Robert F. Kennedy and his wife, Ethel, bought another adjacent property, creating the core of the compound that exists today, the realtor.com reported.Hyannis Port was not only a place for summer holidays. It also played a role in John F. Kennedy’s political career. It was at the main house that Kennedy reportedly decided to run for president in 1960. The property later served as his campaign headquarters.During Kennedy’s presidency, the compound became known as the “seaside White House”. He once reflected on the importance of the Cape Cod retreat, saying: “I always come back to the Cape and walk on the beach when I have a tough decision to make.”Photographs of Kennedy and his wife, Jacqueline, spending time with their children at the compound helped turn the property into a symbol of family life behind the White House.Kennedy spent his final Labor Day holiday at Hyannis Port from August 29 to September 2, 1963, less than three months before his assassination.Archival photographs and home-movie footage preserved by the John F Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum show the president enjoying a weekend filled with familiar family activities. After Kennedy’s death, Hyannis Port became closely associated with the memory of his presidency. It was also where Jacqueline Kennedy sought refuge after the assassination. In the aftermath, she helped shape the “Camelot” image of Kennedy’s White House, drawing on the late president’s fondness for the Broadway musical. In her first official interview after his death, she said: “Don’t let it be forgot, that for one brief, shining moment there was Camelot.”Over the years, the compound also became a place where the family gathered to mourn major losses, including the deaths of Joseph P Kennedy Jr during World War II, Robert F Kennedy in 1968 and John F Kennedy Jr, who died in a plane crash with his wife, Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, in 1999.The property was designated a US National Historic Landmark in 1972, reflecting its significance in American political and cultural history. Despite its association with tragedy and political history, Hyannis Port has remained a place for family celebrations. The Kennedy descendants continue to gather at the compound for an annual Fourth of July reunion. Family photographs once shared with the media are now frequently posted on social media, offering glimpses of the extended family gathering on the historic property. The compound is unlikely to enter the real estate market anytime soon. However, several nearby properties offer a taste of the waterfront lifestyle associated with Hyannis Port.A historic seaside estate on Washington Avenue is listed for $7,999,999. Built in 1920, the property includes 10 bedrooms, 6.5 bathrooms and about 5,500 square feet spread across a main house and guesthouse. It features water views, a built-in bar, three fireplaces, a covered porch, three garage bays and space for guests. For buyers seeking a more modest Cape Cod home, a three-bedroom beach house in Hyannis is listed for $899,900. The 1,800-square-foot property features marsh views, a gas fireplace, a private deck and a second-floor terrace. While these homes cannot replicate the history of the Kennedy compound, they offer a connection to the same coastal setting that has defined the family’s summers for generations.
