Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold lineup has grown steadily over the years, with each generation typically bringing a marginally larger inner display alongside a wider, more usable outer cover screen. What sets Apple’s display apart
Apple has taken a distinctive approach with the iPhone Duo’s display, built around what the company calls a nano-texture finish. This gives the screen a matte look that cuts down on glare and reflections, while also helping visually minimise the crease that naturally forms along a foldable’s hinge area. To achieve this, Apple says it has developed a custom polymer specifically for the nano-textured cover layer, which the company claims is 40% stiffer than materials typically used elsewhere. This layer is further reinforced with a scratch-resistant coating, adding another layer of durability to the display’s outer surface.According to Macrumors, beneath the surface, Apple relies on custom viscoelastic adhesives to hold the display’s various layers together, an engineering choice aimed at improving flexibility and longevity as the phone folds and unfolds repeatedly over time. The inner foldable display itself is built using 10 ultrathin layers, also finished with the same custom nano-texture coating to reduce glare across the entire panel.Apple has also managed to hide the under-display FaceTime camera within the inner screen, allowing the display to remain visually uninterrupted without a visible camera cutout.
What sets Samsung’s display apart
Samsung, on the other hand, has taken a somewhat different route with the Galaxy Z Fold8.The main screen has an anti-reflective coating for better visibility and to reduce glare, particularly when used outdoors or in bright environments. Samsung added a titanium layer under the display for more durability, and strengthened the shock-absorbing layer below the screen. This is to make the screen more resilient to everyday drops and impacts.On the glass front, Samsung uses Corning Gorilla Glass Ceramic 3 on the front of the device, a material built specifically to withstand scratches and damage from repeated folding. The rear of the phone, meanwhile, is protected using Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2, a more traditional but proven choice for shielding the back panel from everyday wear.
The bigger picture
While both companies are solving similar problems, minimising crease visibility, reducing glare and improving overall durability, their approaches reflect very different engineering philosophies. Apple leans heavily into custom-built materials and adhesives designed specifically around its own nano-texture finish. Samsung, by contrast, relies more on layered physical reinforcement through titanium and established Gorilla Glass technology, prioritising raw durability built on years of foldable refinement.
