More than a century ago, a railroad dam blocked Michigan’s Buckhorn Creek; after its removal, the stream is flowing freely again and a new 90-foot bridge now crosses above it
More than 100 years after a dam built beneath the historic Grand Rapids and Indiana Railroad disrupted the natural flow of Buckhorn Creek, the waterway is running free again, and the Fred Meijer White Pine Trail now crosses it on a new 90-foot bridge. The Muskegon River Watershed Assembly (MRWA), which has led the restoration project with state, federal and local partners, will mark the milestone with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Sept. 25. The organization confirmed the event and the completion of the bridge on its website. The transformation is the culmination of years of planning around an aging dam that had become both an environmental obstacle and an infrastructure concern.
A century-old barrier comes down
The Buckhorn Dam was more than a century old and had begun to deteriorate. The structure sat beneath the White Pine Trail, meaning its removal also required a new crossing for cyclists, hikers, snowmobilers and emergency vehicles.Plans for the project called for the dam and an old culvert to be removed and replaced with a full-span bridge, allowing Buckhorn Creek to return to a more natural channel. Work began in May 2026, with the trail temporarily closed and users directed to a detour.By June, MRWA said Buckhorn Creek was flowing freely for the first time in more than 125 years. The organization’s project timeline lists the new bridge as the replacement crossing for the White Pine Trail.
What the restoration means for fish
The project is about more than replacing old infrastructure. Buckhorn Creek is a cold-water tributary of the Muskegon River, and removing the dam restores aquatic connectivity between the creek and the larger river system. The Great Lakes Fishery Trust says the project will allow fish to reach more than seven miles of cold-water refuge and spawning habitat.The Michigan Department of Natural Resources has also identified the project as a way to reconnect stream habitat used by brook trout and other aquatic species while restoring wetlands and eliminating the shallow reservoir created by the old dam. That matters particularly in an area where thousands of trout are stocked annually. The restored creek can provide cooler water and additional refuge for fish during warmer months.
From dam site to trail landmark
The new bridge changes the experience for people using the White Pine Trail, too. Instead of passing over the old impoundment, trail users can now look down onto a free-flowing creek. MRWA describes the location as one of the newest scenic spots along the trail and plans to continue ecological restoration around it. The next phase will focus on the creek banks and the life returning to the restored stream.
Volunteers will help give the creek a fresh start
On Sept. 26, the day after the ribbon cutting, MRWA will hold its Buckhorn Restoration Bonanza at the former dam site. Volunteers will plant trees, shrubs and native plants along the creek banks, helping stabilize the soil and create habitat. Others will participate in stream monitoring by collecting aquatic macroinvertebrates, small organisms whose presence can help scientists assess stream health.The work builds on three years of volunteer monitoring of Buckhorn Creek and is intended to establish a longer-term picture of how the ecosystem responds after the dam’s removal. For a creek that spent more than a century constrained by a railroad-era structure, the change is striking: the barrier is gone, fish can move through the restored connection, and a new bridge carries the trail above the water rather than holding it back.
