In 1941, US Steel built a summer camp lodge at Indiana Dunes; after about 50 years closed, it has reopened and workers found an original time capsule hidden in its walls
Generations of Northwest Indiana children began their adventure at a summer camp along the Little Calumet River. Almost a century after the lodge opened its doors, the historic building at Indiana Dunes National Park is once again open for visitors. The reopening has an unexpected link to the past, thanks to a long-forgotten time capsule found hidden within its walls, states a National Park Service report. The Good Fellow Camp Lodge has been significantly rehabilitated, starting a new chapter for a building that was once the hub of a summer camp for thousands of children. According to the report, in 1941, the U.S. Steel Company built the lodge for the children of its employees. The Good Fellow Youth Camp, which ran from 1941 to 1975, provided generations of young people with an opportunity to get outdoors in what would later become Indiana Dunes National Park. The camp’s distinctive architecture and history also speak to the industrial heritage of Northwest Indiana, where the steel industry was a major force in shaping local communities. The camp was closed and the lodge sat vacant for decades. The restoration today allows the historic structure to once again serve the public.
A time capsule buried in the walls
While renovating, workers discovered something incredible: an original time capsule hidden inside the building from when it was constructed. The capsule was on display during the ceremonial reopening, serving as a physical connection to the lodge’s earliest history for former campers and other visitors. The park intends to restore the capsule inside the lodge, adding more items that reflect the building and its community today, rather than simply returning the capsule to where it was hidden. The end result will be a physical connection between those who built and enjoyed the lodge decades ago, and the guests who will enjoy it in the future.
Campers are back
Alumni of the Good Fellow Youth Camp returned for the reopening and reminisced about the history of the building and its role in their childhood. Partners in the ceremony included the National Park Foundation, Save the Dunes, Friends of Indiana Dunes and the Dunes Learning Center. The restored lodge will offer educational programs and community events and give visitors another way to experience the park’s history.
A component of broader preservation efforts
The rehabilitation is part of a $25.4 million project to restore historic structures throughout Indiana Dunes National Park. Funding for the lodge was through the Legacy Restoration Fund established by the Great American Outdoors Act of 2020. The program is assisting the National Park Service with long-delayed maintenance and boosting the safety, reliability and accessibility of historic public structures. Other Indiana Dunes projects funded by the fund include preservation work at the Bailly Homestead, an early 19th-century national historic landmark, and the House of Tomorrow, the futuristic home created for the 1933 Chicago World’s Fair.
Linking the past and the future
Today, Indiana Dunes National Park has more than 50 miles of trails through forests, wetlands, shifting dunes and the Lake Michigan shoreline. The restored lodge adds another layer to that experience, preserving a piece of the region’s industrial and recreational history while making room for future generations. The park’s economic impact extends far beyond its borders.
