SHAHJAHANPUR: A video purportedly showing several Shahjahanpur Municipal Corporation councillors taking an oath to “honestly” share alleged bribe proceeds among themselves has gone viral on social media, prompting the civic body to order an inquiry, officials said on Tuesday, according to news agency PTI.In the video, a municipal councillor is seen holding a vessel containing Gangajal and allegedly taking an oath that proceeds from bribes would be shared equally among 60 people.A group of people can be seen standing with water in their hands and repeating the oath led by one person. They have been identified on social media as municipal councillors, although the authenticity of the video and the identities of those seen in it have not been independently verified.According to the purported oath, money received by the municipal corporation would be divided equally among all 60 councillors. The group also allegedly vows to stand united if any member gets into trouble.The video contains an objectionable reference to a person described as a “traitor” for breaking the oath.The footage has triggered allegations of corruption against councillors on social media. Some users have also questioned the alleged increase in the assets of a councillor, claiming that the person owned only one house three years ago but has since acquired several houses and luxury vehicles.Municipal Commissioner Saumya Gururani told news agency PTI that the video was reportedly recorded in November 2025, when another municipal commissioner was in charge.“Even so, we have ordered an inquiry,” she said, adding that further action would be taken based on the findings.
