Google has introduced Gemini Enterprise for Legal, a suite of pre-built AI skills and agents designed to automate legal workflows. The move positions Google directly against rivals OpenAI and Anthropic, both of which have been building legal-focused tools this year. Microsoft also debuted its own legal agent earlier in 2026. Google developed the system with input from attorneys at firms including Cleary Gottlieb and Freshfields. It has also partnered with litigation platforms Everlaw and Relativity, as well as contract management providers iManage, NetDocuments, and DocuSign.
What Google announced
Google unveiled Gemini Enterprise for Legal on Tuesday, a bundle of pre-built Gemini skills and virtual assistants — referred to as agents — designed to plug directly into the systems where a law firm’s data already lives and carry out substantive legal work. According to Google’s own announcement, the product rests on four components: purpose-built skills for tasks like contract review, redlining, and regulatory tracking; secure connections into a firm’s existing document and case systems; agents that complete tasks rather than simply return suggestions; and an open ecosystem of partners that let firms customize and extend the platform.Lawyers using the suite will be able to review and negotiate contracts, track regulatory changes, and search across case files and internal documents. Google said client data, model outputs, and other firm information will not be used to train its foundation models — a direct answer to one of the biggest confidentiality concerns law firms have raised about adopting AI tools.
Everyone wants a piece of the legal industry
Google isn’t alone in chasing legal dollars. Anthropic has spent much of the year courting lawyers with plugins built for document review and drafting. OpenAI is assembling its own legal software team, led by Ironclad founder Jason Boehmig. Microsoft rolled out its own legal agent earlier this year. The interest from four of the industry’s biggest AI players reflects where the money — and the pressure — currently sits.That pressure is coming from both directions. Law firms are under growing pressure from clients to move faster and prove they aren’t billing associates for work that AI agents can now handle. At the same time, in-house legal teams are looking to automate more of their own work, reducing how much they need to send to outside counsel and shrinking overall legal spend.

Google’s conciliatory approach — built on partnerships, not replacement
Rather than positioning itself as a replacement for existing legal software, Google has built Gemini Enterprise for Legal around deep integration with the tools law firms already use. For litigation and e-discovery, it has partnered with Everlaw and Relativity. For managing cases and contracts, it’s tied in with iManage, NetDocuments, and Docusign. Other partners include Thomson Reuters, Harvey, and Legora, alongside implementation partners like Accenture, Deloitte, and KPMG.Google also said it developed the product with direct input from attorneys at major law firms, including Cleary Gottlieb, Freshfields, Weil, and Williams & Connolly. In its announcement, the company argued that general-purpose AI is “nowhere near sufficient” for legal work, where trust and accuracy are non-negotiable, and framed the product’s value as coming from the governance and system integration built around the underlying model — not the model alone.
