Ukraine marks 4th I-Day amid war: How drones & defiance stopped Russia’s war machine in its tracks
It has been 1,642 days since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022. As Ukraine marks its fourth Independence Day under war, the conflict has hardened into a static grind, with large-scale manoeuvres now nearly non-existent. Another CSIS report points to ballooning financial costs, as sanctions and war expenditures strain Russia’s economy while its industrial base struggles to replace lost equipment. Ukraine, meanwhile, has innovated with drones and adapted older systems to fire Western missiles.The war has now become a test of endurance. Russia is increasingly dependent on partners such as Iran and North Korea for drones, artillery shells and missiles, highlighting the high consumption and limited production capacity for these weapons. Ukraine continues to absorb enormous damage but has demonstrated remarkable adaptability and determination. As another CSIS report notes, the conflict has become a prolonged struggle in which neither side has been able to secure a decisive advantage, while both remain locked in a cycle of destruction that is reshaping Europe’s security order and straining ties between the Trump White House and its European allies.For Ukraine, the fight is existential, fought under the shadow of Russian strikes even on its Independence Day. Kyiv has halted Moscow’s advance, but at a huge cost. The war has become a costly quagmire, draining men and material from both nations while offering little prospect of a decisive outcome.
