In a boost to the Indian Navy‘s surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities over the Indian Ocean Region (IOR), the defence ministry has signed a contract with General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. for the leasing of two MQ‑9B Sea Guardian High‑Altitude Long‑Endurance (HALE) remotely piloted aircraft systems for the Indian Navy. Valued at around Rs 1,943 crore, the 30‑month lease is intended to provide persistent intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance coverage across the Indian Ocean Region. Equipped with advanced sensors and payloads, the Sea Guardians will significantly enhance maritime domain awareness, giving the Navy the ability to monitor vast areas and respond swiftly to developments. This becomes even more important now due to the conflict in West Asia and China’s increasing forays in the IOR.This leasing arrangement comes alongside India’s larger $3.5 billion deal with the United States to procure 31 MQ‑9B Predator drones under the Foreign Military Sales programme. That tri‑service acquisition includes 15 Sea Guardians for the Navy and eight Sky Guardians each for the Air Force and Army. The $3.5 billion package also covers the establishment of a Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility in India, ensuring long‑term support and performance‑based logistics. The drones are expected to bolster surveillance along the northern border with China and track naval activity across the Indian Ocean, strengthening India’s surveillance and reconnaissance posture across the vast expanses of the sea.

A notable feature of the procurement is the assembly of 21 of the 31 drones in India, with only 10 delivered in flyaway condition from the US. This localisation of prodcution represents a significant step in building India’s defence manufacturing ecosystem. This would allow domestic industry to acquire advanced assembly expertise and improve the high-tech supply chain.Once inducted, India will become the largest operator of MQ‑9B drones worldwide after the United States. The platforms will provide unmatched endurance, enhancing intelligence gathering, maritime surveillance and cross‑border security operations. The deal for these 31 drones is a prime example of the growing strategic partnership between the two countries, with both countries working towards securing a free and open Indo‑Pacific, in light of an assertive China.
