Elon Musk reshares 'forecast' he made in 2014 on AI, says he his warning has been proved correct

Elon Musk has reshared a decade-old warning about artificial intelligence (AI), reiterating his long-held belief that the rapid advance of machine intelligence poses an existential threat to humanity. Reposting his 2014 prediction that unchecked AI could prove “more dangerous than nukes,” the Tesla and SpaceX founder asserted that recent developments in digital superintelligence have proved his early warnings correct. The tech entrepreneur’s post, “As I was saying …” comes soon after ChatGPT-maker OpenAI and Claude developer Anthropic revealed that their AI models went on to hack multiple organisations during testing.

Tesla CEO’s a decade of warnings

Musk initially raised alarm bells over AI in 2014, warning on social media that humanity needed to exercise extreme caution with machine learning technologies. At the time, he famously questioned whether biological brains were at risk of becoming a mere “boot loader for digital superintelligence.”He later expanded on those concerns during a keynote address at the South by Southwest (SXSW) conference in Austin, Texas, where he described the exponential rate of AI improvement as one of the most pressing crises facing civilisation.“I am really quite close to the cutting edge in AI and it scares the hell out of me. It’s capable of vastly more than almost anyone knows and the rate of improvement is exponential. Mark my words, AI is far more dangerous than nukes,” Musk said regarding machine development.

Pushing for public oversight and regulation

While Musk traditionally favours minimal government intervention in technology, he has consistently made an exception for AI, arguing that public safety requires proactive federal oversight. Comparing AI safety to nuclear proliferation, Musk argued that allowing companies to build digital superintelligence without guardrails presents unacceptable societal risks.“This is a case where you have a very serious danger to the public. It needs to be a public body that has insight and then oversight to confirm that everyone is developing AI safely. Nobody would suggest that we allow anyone to build nuclear warheads if they want,” Musk said at that time.Musk’s predictions have drawn pushback from other prominent tech figures and academics over the years. Meta founder Mark Zuckerberg previously called extreme doomsday scenarios irresponsible, while Harvard professor Steven Pinker criticised high-profile alarmism surrounding AI risks.
