Twelve years ago, Resham’s life was altered in seconds. Her mother’s cousin, a man 20 years her senior, targeted her after she rejected his advances. Instead of submitting to fear, the Class 11 student fought back fiercely during the assault, a move that saved her from even more catastrophic injuries.Her raw courage gripped the nation. In 2015, then-President Pranab Mukherjee honored her with the Bharat Award, India’s highest national bravery award for children.While her attacker later died by suicide in prison while awaiting trial, Resham chose a different path of justice: living a life so impactful that it defied the tragedy completely.
Books Over Scars: An Unmatched Academic Trajectory
Many expected the intense physical and emotional trauma to derail her education. Behind Resham’s historic UK milestone is a quiet support system. Following her attack, it was her late grandparents who anchored her in Lucknow. Years later, a new pillar entered her life. Resham married her husband, Asghar, in 2024.It was Asghar who recognized her deep-seated desire to affect global policy and actively pushed her to apply for the fiercely competitive Chevening Scholarship.For months, Resham kept her massive ambition a secret, battling the self-doubt that society often projects onto survivors. “I kept this dream to myself for a long time. Today, I can finally say it out loud,” she revealed after the results were made public.
Changing the System from the Grassroots
While Resham initially dreamed of clearing the Indian Civil Services, her time at JNU shifted her focus toward grassroots gender advocacy. She realized that true change happens by empowering the most vulnerable before they fall through the cracks of the system.In 2023, she founded the Ebrah Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to mentoring young, marginalized Muslim women. The foundation helps grassroots girls break cycles of dependency by establishing direct career pathways and financial independence.
LSE and Beyond: A Message to the World
Resham’s name literally translates to “silk thread.” True to her name, she has proven to be incredibly strong, flexible, and unbroken under immense structural pressure.As she prepares to fly to London, Resham views LSE not as a final destination, but as a launchpad. She plans to use her global education to return to India and design scalable policies for women’s safety and economic empowerment.Her message to young girls across India who are told their circumstances dictate their future is simple: “It’s the beginning of an even bigger purpose… [a message] for young girls who have been told that their dreams are too big.”
