The childhood struggle that inspired LeBron James’ biggest off-court mission
On Aug. 13, 2015, the LeBron James Family Foundation announced a partnership with the University of Akron. The agreement guaranteed eligible I Promise students a four-year scholarship that covered tuition and general service fees. Based on university costs at the time, the scholarships were estimated to be worth about $41 million in total. The program did not offer automatic scholarships. Students had to graduate from Akron Public Schools, meet admission requirements and complete community service obligations.For LeBron James, the announcement felt deeply personal. Speaking during the event in Akron, he said, “You don’t really think past high school.”He then explained the feeling behind those words. “Either it’s not possible or your family’s not financially stable to even be able to support a kid going to college.”That remark captured the reality of his childhood. James grew up with his mother, Gloria James, and often faced financial instability. He has spoken about moving frequently and dealing with uncertainty during his early years. Basketball eventually gave him direction, but he never forgot how limited the future can feel for many children growing up in difficult circumstances.The I Promise program started in 2011 and focused on mentoring, academic support and family assistance for at-risk students in Akron.
