Italy has temporarily suspended the Schengen border-free travel arrangement with Spain for one month following the unprecedented migrant influx into Spain’s North African enclave of Ceuta, a move that will require travellers flying or sailing between the two countries to undergo passport checks.The Italian government said the decision was taken after thousands of migrants crossed into Ceuta from neighbouring Morocco. Although Spain later said most of those who entered had voluntarily returned, Rome argued that the crisis exposed the need for tighter border controls.Unlike neighbouring countries, Italy does not share a land border with Spain. However, the suspension will affect passengers travelling by air or sea, who will now have to present passports or other identity documents before entering Italy from Spain.Italy’s Interior Ministry also announced that it had reached an agreement with France to strengthen checks along the Franco-Italian land border in an effort to stop undocumented migrants from entering Italy.The decision has drawn criticism from opposition leaders, who accused Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s government of making a political gesture rather than responding to an immediate security threat.“The problem is that this is a purely demagogic proposal, as usual designed for domestic consumption and to compete with Vannacci, without solving anything at all,” said Piero De Luca, a senior lawmaker from the centre-left Democratic Party.Critics also noted that there was no evidence suggesting the migrants who entered Ceuta intended to travel onwards to Italy.The move came shortly after Spain said it had brought the border situation under control, with most of the more than 50,000 migrants who crossed into Ceuta already returning voluntarily to Morocco.Meloni’s government, which came to power in 2022 on a promise to curb illegal immigration, has recently faced mounting pressure from a new far-right party led by former army general Roberto Vannacci, whose anti-migrant campaign has gained support among some voters.With migration once again dominating political debate, the government has sought to project a tougher stance on border security, while opposition parties accused it of appealing to populist sentiment.

The Schengen Area allows people to travel across 29 European countries without routine passport or border checks at internal frontiers. While the system normally guarantees passport-free movement, member states are allowed to temporarily reintroduce border controls if they believe there is a serious threat to public order or national security.Under Italy’s temporary suspension, border police will carry out “targeted, selective checks” on travellers from Spain who are nationals of countries outside the European Union to verify that they have the required documents to travel within the EU.
