A love that waited 7 years ended in 1 month: Army major returns home draped in Tricolour
Major Hamza Arif had married his Hindu engineer partner just one month prior

JAISALMER: What was meant to be the beginning of a lifetime together turned into an unimaginable tragedy for Major Hamza Arif and his young bride. After spending seven years in a committed relationship and finally convincing their families to accept their marriage, the couple had tied the knot only a month ago. Before the henna on his wife’s hands had even faded, fate dealt a devastating blow.Late on Thursday night, Major Hamza Arif lost his life in a horrific road accident near Jaisalmer Military Station when the Tata Safari SUV he was driving collided with a camel and overturned several times. With his death, the dreams and hopes his wife had cherished for their new life together were shattered forever. The couple had recently begun their married life with great optimism.Major Hamza had purchased a new Tata Safari SUV, and his family in Indore had already begun preparations for a grand wedding reception planned for December, when the newlyweds were expected to visit home. Instead of returning to celebrate, the young Army officer is now making his final journey wrapped in the Indian Tricolour.Photographs from the couple’s wedding have gone viral on social media, capturing moments of joy, hope and togetherness. The images have deeply moved people, highlighting the heartbreaking contrast between their recent happiness and the tragedy that followed.Major Hamza Arif is survived by his parents and three sisters. He was the only son of a middle-class Bohra Muslim family, and his untimely death has left the family devastated.According to his childhood friend Aman Shukla of Indore, Major Hamza was a native of Dhanvantri Nagar, Indore. He completed his Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Chameli Devi College in 2016.Determined to serve the nation, he cleared the selection process and joined the Indian Army in 2017.Through dedication, discipline and exceptional service, he earned three promotions within just nine years, rising to the rank of Major. He was serving at Jaisalmer Military Station at the time of the accident. The fatal crash occurred around 12:30am on Thursday night, nearly 8 kilometres from Jaisalmer city, when the SUV suddenly struck a camel on the road inside the Army area. The impact was so severe that the vehicle overturned four to five times, leaving Major Hamza critically injured. Two other officers travelling with him, Lieutenant Ayushman Gusain and Lieutenant Abhinav Rathore, also sustained injuries. All three were rushed to the Army Hospital, where doctors declared Major Hamza dead. The two injured officers continue to receive treatment.Another childhood friend, Navneet Hardia, said the tragedy has left everyone in shock because Major Hamza had only recently married his Hindu engineer partner after a seven-year relationship. The couple had faced considerable challenges in persuading their families to accept their union before finally solemnising their marriage through a court marriage just a month ago.“The family had been eagerly waiting for the couple to come home in December and had already started planning a grand reception,” he said. “No one could have imagined that instead of welcoming the newlyweds, they would be receiving Hamza’s mortal remains wrapped in the national flag.”Friends said Major Hamza’s wife had looked forward to building a happy life with her husband and supporting him through his Army career. Those dreams have now been cruelly cut short. Overwhelmed with grief, she is accompanying his mortal remains to Indore for his final journey.Major Hamza had recently purchased the Tata Safari SUV involved in the accident and was driving it himself when the tragedy occurred. The accident has plunged Jaisalmer Military Station and Indore into mourning. Fellow officers, soldiers, friends and relatives have remembered Major Hamza as a dedicated Army officer, a compassionate human being and a humble individual who was deeply respected by everyone who knew him.According to family members and local representatives, Major Hamza Arif’s mortal remains will be brought to Indore on Saturday, where he will be laid to rest with full military honours in accordance with the traditions of the Indian Army and the religious customs of the Bohra Muslim community. His passing has left behind not only a grieving family but also a young bride whose dreams of a lifetime together were tragically cut short just weeks after their marriage.
