Getting 'carried away' again? Musk's million-dollar plan to rescue Trump in mid-elections

Days after Elon Musk admitted that he “got carried away” during Donald Trump’s 2024 election campaign, he is once again stepping into the US political arena with a major push to help Republicans win the 2026 midterm elections. The tech billionaire is reviving his political action committee, America PAC, which played a key role in then-presidential candidate Donald Trump’s 2024 campaign.During the 2024 presidential elections, America PAC spent more than $260 million to help Trump secure a win. This time, the group will focus on increasing Republican voter turnout through door-to-door campaigns, digital advertisements and direct mail.Sources familiar with the plans told Axios that the group will target conservative voters, including those who usually do not vote in non-presidential elections.Though the amount the tech mogul plans to spend has not been revealed yet, it is expected to be large considering his spending during the 2024 election.

Musk’s massive push

Musk’s donations through America PAC in 2024 made him the biggest individual political donor in a single US election cycle. The group has said that it knocked on more than 10 million doors across more than six swing states during the campaign. For the 2026 midterms, America PAC will work with other Republican groups.By focusing on voter turnout, Musk’s group will allow other Republican organisations to spend more time and money on television advertisements. The campaign will be led by Musk’s top political adviser, Chris Young.“America PAC was an essential partner for our historic GOTV operation in 2024, and their return for 2026 is a huge boost for Republicans across the country,” James Blair, President Trump’s senior political adviser, told Axios.“We will again outsmart our opponents and ruthlessly execute our mission for the GOP between now and Election Day,” Blair added.Musk’s return comes at a time when Republicans have a strong financial advantage over Democrats before the November 3 elections. Republican super PACs and committees have a more than $300 million advantage over Democratic groups and $400 million available in Trump’s MAGA Inc. super PAC.The Republican Party hopes this financial strength will help it overcome concerns around Trump’s low approval ratings, especially on the economy and the Iran war. These concerns have created challenges for Republicans as they try to maintain control of the House and possibly the Senate.Musk has been in talks with Trump’s team about how he can support the Republican campaign.“The president’s political team and the rest of the GOP apparatus have built a top-notch operation that will put Republicans in a strong position to buck history and retain control of Congress this fall, and we’re excited to again be part of the team,” America PAC spokesperson Andrew Romeo told Axios.

‘Got carried away’ in 2024

Musk’s return to political activity comes days after he admitted that he became too involved in politics during his close relationship with Trump. In an interview with The Economist, the entrepreneur said that he should have spent more time running his companies instead of leading the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).DOGE was a government cost-cutting initiative that oversaw spending cuts and layoffs across government departments. Talking about his political involvement, Musk said, “I got carried away, frankly.”Musk had supported Trump’s 2024 campaign with around $200 million before becoming the head of DOGE.He later admitted that he could have focused more on his businesses. Earlier, during a podcast appearance in December, he had said, “I think instead of doing DOGE, I would have basically worked on my companies,” he had said.Musk’s relationship with Trump became strained after his four-month role leading DOGE. Musk criticised the large spending in Trump’s “big, beautiful bill” and even suggested creating a third party to challenge Republicans. However, his relationship with Trump improved over the following year. By the end of 2025, Musk was again contributing to Republican campaigns. He also donated $10 million to Kentucky GOP Senate candidate Nate Morris, who later left the race to take a job in the Trump administration.
