After sending New York's wealthy residents 'check your mailbox' warning, Mayor Zohran Mamdani has published a searchable database with ...
New York mayor Zohran Mamdani says the tax would help fund parks, libraries and schools

New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s administration has published a searchable online database listing the names and addresses of property owners who could be affected by the city’s new pied-à-terre tax. As reported by New York Post, the database includes properties across the city’s five boroughs valued at more than $1 million, although the tax is intended to apply only to qualifying non-primary residences worth more than $5 million. The database follows Mamdani’s July 24 post on X (formerly Twitter), in which he told owners of second homes worth more than $5 million to “check your mailbox” because notification letters about the new tax had been sent.At the time, Mamdani said the tax would help fund parks, libraries and schools, adding that, “The best city in the world deserves the best parks, libraries, and schools in the world. That’s only possible when we all pay our fair share.”

New York City publishes searchable property database

The New York City Department of Finance uploaded the database, allowing users to search properties that could potentially fall under the new pied-à-terre tax. According to the city, the list covers unoccupied, non-primary residences across the five boroughs valued above $1 million and includes the names and addresses of property owners.According to reports, the database includes more than 960,000 properties and owners, far higher than the roughly 31,000 homes that officials had originally said would be subject to the tax.The list also reportedly includes well-known names such as Anna Wintour, Woody Allen and Cynthia Nixon, along with many homes in middle-class neighbourhoods whose values appear to fall below the proposed tax threshold. The publication of the database has drawn criticism from political opponents. Council Minority Leader David Carr said the move was “a reckless and foolish move,” arguing that thousands of listed properties may not qualify as second homes or could later be removed after appeals.

What is New York City’s proposed tax

New York City’s new tax on second homes is aimed to more than double property taxes owed by many wealthy luxury apartment owners. The pied-à-terre tax is expected to generate additional revenue for New York City. City Hall has estimated the measure could raise around $500 million annually, while the city comptroller’s office has projected a lower figure of $340 million to $380 million per year, with revenues potentially declining over time.
