Jeff Bezos stepped away from Amazon as CEO. His latest investment shows where he's placing his biggest bets now

When Jeff Bezos stepped down as Amazon‘s chief executive in July 2021, many assumed he would gradually retreat from the business world. Instead, the billionaire shifted his attention to a broader portfolio of ambitious ventures while remaining Amazon’s executive chairman. From commercial spaceflight and climate initiatives to artificial intelligence and biotechnology, Bezos has continued to back industries he believes will shape the future. His latest moves, particularly his growing focus on AI through both Amazon and his own ventures, reveal that he is not simply investing in the next successful company. He is betting on technologies that could redefine entire industries over the coming decades.

Why did Jeff Bezos step down as Amazon CEO?

Jeff Bezos announced in February 2021 that he would step down as Amazon CEO, with the transition becoming effective on 5 July 2021. Andy Jassy, who had built Amazon Web Services into the world’s leading cloud computing business, succeeded him. Bezos said the move would allow him to devote more time and energy to projects outside Amazon, including Blue Origin, the Bezos Earth Fund, the Day 1 Fund and other long-term initiatives. Although he no longer manages Amazon’s daily operations, he continues to serve as executive chairman and remains closely involved in major strategic decisions.

Artificial intelligence has become Bezos’ biggest priority

Artificial intelligence has increasingly become the centrepiece of Bezos’ post-Amazon strategy. In recent interviews, he has indicated that much of his attention is now focused on AI, both within Amazon and through his own ventures. According to recent reporting, Amazon expects to spend around $200 billion on capital investments in 2026, with the bulk of that funding going towards AI infrastructure, custom-designed chips and data centres. Bezos has described Amazon’s Trainium and Graviton chip business as a future pillar of the company, signalling that AI hardware will be as important to Amazon’s future as retail, cloud computing and streaming.

His latest investment goes beyond chatbots

One of Bezos’ most significant recent bets is Project Prometheus, an artificial intelligence company he co-founded in 2025 with former Google executive Vik Bajaj. Unlike many AI companies focused on consumer chatbots, Prometheus aims to build AI systems that can assist engineers in designing and manufacturing physical products, including computers, spacecraft and automobiles. The company has attracted billions of dollars in funding and recruited researchers from leading AI firms. Rather than competing directly with ChatGPT-style products, Prometheus is focused on applying AI to engineering and industrial production, reflecting Bezos’ long-standing interest in solving complex physical and scientific problems.

Bezos is still shaping Amazon’s AI future

Despite stepping away from the CEO role, Bezos continues to influence Amazon’s direction. Reuters recently reported that he personally pushed executives to redesign Prime Video so artificial intelligence becomes a core part of the streaming experience. The internal project, known as “Lighthouse”, aims to use AI to deliver more personalised recommendations, improve content discovery and showcase Amazon’s broader AI capabilities to more than 200 million Prime subscribers worldwide. His direct involvement demonstrates that while Andy Jassy oversees Amazon’s day-to-day business, Bezos remains deeply engaged in decisions that could determine the company’s long-term competitiveness in the AI race.

Space, climate and healthcare remain part of his long-term vision

Artificial intelligence is only one part of Bezos’ investment strategy. Through Blue Origin, he continues pursuing reusable rocket technology and long-term plans for human activity in space. His Bezos Earth Fund has committed billions of dollars towards climate and conservation initiatives, while Altos Labs, another venture backed by Bezos, is exploring ways to better understand ageing and develop therapies for age-related diseases.Together, these investments reflect a consistent philosophy: backing technologies that could have transformative effects over decades rather than seeking quick financial returns.

What Bezos’ latest bets reveal

Jeff Bezos no longer runs Amazon’s daily operations, but his influence on technology has not diminished. His recent investments suggest that he sees artificial intelligence as the defining technology of the coming decades, particularly when combined with advanced computing, engineering and manufacturing. Rather than concentrating solely on consumer AI products, Bezos is backing the infrastructure and industrial applications that could underpin the next generation of technological innovation. His transition from Amazon CEO to investor and executive chairman has therefore not marked the end of his entrepreneurial ambitions. Instead, it has given him greater freedom to pursue some of the world’s most ambitious and capital-intensive ideas, with AI increasingly sitting at the centre of that vision.
