NEW DELHI: Junaid Malik, who distributed food at CJP protest site at Jantar Mantar, Tuesday moved Supreme Court accusing Delhi Police of kidnapping him, questioning him about funds for food supply and then abandoning him near Dehradun. He also alleged that UP Police harassed his family members because of the support he had lent to the agitation.Appearing for Junaid, advocate Prashant Bhushan told a bench led by CJI Surya Kant that while the agitation was continuing, UP Police had pressured his family members to persuade him to refrain from participating in the protest, return home and appear before police to disclose the source of funds for the food he supplied to protestors.“Questioning and coercive actions against the family members were carried out, inter alia, by DSP (Rural), Ghaziabad, ASP Masuri, SHO Masuri and two Intelligence Bureau officers from Delhi, who also questioned family members of applicant’s married sister,” he alleged through advocate-on-record Neha Rathi.“Such conduct can’t be justified as a legitimate exercise of police power and warrants strict judicial scrutiny to ensure that machinery of the State is not employed as an instrument of intimidation, coercion or retaliation against persons exercising their fundamental rights,” he said.
