A data centre debate at a city council meeting in Kansas left one resident dealing with legal trouble. Lux Claridge, a 37-year-old Emporia High School physics teacher, was carried out in handcuffs after repeatedly clapping during a public discussion on zoning changes for the proposed Flint Hills Digital Campus data center. This comes after Emporia city’s commissioners had repeatedly warned attendees against disruptive behaviour, including clapping, snapping or making rude comments, before voting on the project.According to the Emporia Police Department, Claridge continued clapping after receiving repeated warnings and was directed to leave the meeting. When he did not comply, officers physically removed him from the chamber before arresting him on charges of interference with law enforcement and disorderly conduct. However, local news outlet KCRG has confirmed that Claridge was released from a Kansas jail after posting bail following his arrest.

What the Emporia Police Department said about the arrest

In its official blog, the Emporia Police Department wrote: “On July 22, 2026, the Emporia City Commission held its regularly scheduled meeting. During the course of the meeting, several individuals in attendance were issued verbal warnings by the City Commission regarding disruptive conduct that was interrupting the proceedings. One individual, Lux Claridge, male, 37years of age, continued this behaviour and was directed to leave the meeting. Claridge did not comply with law enforcement’s efforts to remove him from the premises, requiring officers to physically carry him out of the meeting.Claridge was subsequently arrested and booked into the Lyon County Jail on charges of interference with law enforcement and disorderly conduct. As with all criminal charges, Claridge is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.The Emporia Police Department remains committed to ensuring public meetings are conducted safely and in an orderly manner, while also respecting the rights of all citizens to participate in the civic process.”

Kansas teacher says arrest will not stop him

Claridge was later released after posting bail and said the arrest would not discourage him from continuing to participate in public meetings, according to the KCRG report.“I’m glad to be out, but this is an inconvenience, really. It’s not really deterring me from speaking out or I guess, clapping,” he said. Claridge has said he plans to plead not guilty when he appears in court in September.Claridge’s wife, Jessica Danford, said that she was present during the meeting and described watching officers remove him. “Seeing them carried out like that was a lot to handle,” Danford said.Claridge’s brother, David Claridge, noted that he believes the charges will not withstand legal scrutiny. “This isn’t going to hold up in court. Lux is going to fight them on that. I’m looking at avenues to get these people recalled. This is insane to me,” he highlighted.Claridge’s friend Caleb Rankin also said the arrest surprised him. “Out of all the people that I knew, them getting arrested, I thought someone used a different name or something,” Rankin added. One community member who attended the meeting also criticised the arrest, saying, “We are citizens of this community. We have a right to do our constitutionally-protected activities, which is exactly what they’re violating at this time as well. I think we’re all in a state of fear because of what this government’s doing to us.”Meanwhile, the city commission subsequently approved the zoning changes for the proposed Flint Hills Digital Campus data center after the public meeting.
