Sedlec Ossuary: Inside the ‘Church of Bones’: Why this church, built from 40,000 human bones, matters to human history
The Sedlec Ossuary in Kutná Hora, about an hour east of Prague, tucked into the rolling hills of the Czech countryside, looks like any other medieval chapel from the 14th century on the outside: Gothic architecture, weathered stone and a baffling stillness. But once you descend the narrow staircase beneath the main church, nothing you see there is ordinary.Inside is the ossuary, which houses over 40,000 human skeletons. Not relics behind glass, but real human bones. They are not dumped into piles, but carefully arranged into chandeliers, altars, coats of arms and decorative garlands.The skulls line the walls in neat pyramids. The centrepiece is a chandelier crafted entirely from skulls and at least one of every bone in the human body. Its skeletal arms reach upwards to cast light across the vault. That’s Sedlec Ossuary, a Gothic church where memento mori (Latin for remember you must die) became literal.
The Church of Bones
Known as the ‘Church of Bones’, the chapel’s existence begins in 1278, when the King of Bohemia sent the abbot of the Sedlec Cistercian Monastery to Jerusalem. The abbot brought soil from Jerusalem’s hill of Golgotha, where the crucifixion of Jesus Christ is believed to have occurred. He sprinkled the soil around the Sedlec cemetery, transforming it into hallowed ground. Word spread quickly, and many sought to be buried in the ‘holy soil’ after death. So, when the plague ravaged Europe in the 14th century, nearly 30,000 victims were buried there. The Crusades brought an additional 10,000 to rest in this cemetery. Kutná Hora’s cemetery was filled beyond capacity. The bodies were stacked, and the living had no choice but to build upwards. That’s how the Gothic church rose around the graveyard in the early 1400s, with its lower chapel designed specifically as an ossuary for the dead.
Art from beyond life
For nearly a century, the bones remained piled. Legend has it that towards the end of the 15th century, a half-blind monk began the task of exhuming skeletons and stacking their bones into simple pyramids and arches. Later, in 1879, the church hired František Rint, a local woodcarver, to arrange the bones. He created something beautiful from the staggering piles. He bleached the bones and carved them to decorate the holy place. The chandelier hanging from the vault contains at least one of every bone in the human body. A coat of arms was made out of femurs and vertebrae. The garlands that decorate the ceiling are made of skulls. Four bell-shaped mounds occupy the chapel’s corners, constructed entirely from stacked crania. Each bone belonged to someone, so he arranged them to honour them in the most beautiful way possible.
Not for the faint of heart
The Sedlec Ossuary has become one of the biggest tourist attractions in the Czech Republic. It houses one of the most beautiful architectural marvels in Bohemia. This medieval church is not for the faint of heart, and yet it attracts tens of thousands of visitors every year. Jiří Sobr, a resident, also expressed how some visitors disregard the place. “We have a family grave right in front of the entrance to the Church of All Saints in Sedlec. It’s a place where we can go and connect with our family who are no longer with us. A place of rest for those who have died, not only a long time ago, but also those who have passed recently,” Sobr told CNN Travel. “I am glad tourists are interested in seeing it, but I would like them to understand this.”According to Vendula Krůlová, an employee at the ossuary, this unique destination leaves a different impact on each visitor. “It is a transcendental place, full of questions. Somebody finds here peace, somebody anxiety. Everybody is different, but for sure we know that one day we will be the same as the people in the ossuary: memento mori,” the employee told National Geographic.This Church of Bones does not avoid conversations about death, but ignites them. What is death? How do we honour the loved ones who left us? How do we process it? What about those who died in tragedy? Is death the end of a beginning? This is not the eerie spectacle of a horror film. It is a sacred space: one where thousands once hoped to find their final resting place.
How to reach the Sedlec Ossuary
The Sedlec Ossuary sits in the quiet Czech countryside, not far from Prague. From Prague, take a train to Kutná Hora. It’s roughly an hour’s journey by train. Once you get off at Kutná Hora station, either walk to the Sedlec Ossuary or take local transport for the short final stretch. On foot, it takes about 15 minutes; by taxi, just three minutes.
