US Vice President JD Vance says that America’s economic challenges go beyond wages and employment, pointing to a deeper crisis of affordability and opportunity. According to a report by Benzinga, speaking on The Joe Rogan Experience, Vance recalled a conversation with a young engineer earning well above average yet still unable to image owning a home. “You make way more money than 75% of people your age… and you think it is like this ridiculous, unachievable objective to have literally what your parents had,” Vance said.
Engineer’s frustration highlights a larger problem
For Vance, the frustration of the engineer highlights larger problems: even financially successful professionals feel locked out of the middle-class lifestyle their parents enjoyed. He blamed decades of offshoring industrial jobs, reliance on foreign labor, and Wall Street’s dominance over everyday assets for eroding economic security. Rising housing costs, he said, remain the clearest example of how the system is failing.
Immigration and home ownership
Vance further argued that high immigration levels have intensified competition for housing, though he credited tighter broader policies with helping stabilise rents and prices in recent years. Without a realistic path to homeownership, he also warned that more Americans could lose faith in the system. “It’s created a generation of kids who kind of are attracted to socialism,” he told Rogan.
AI could worsen inequality
The conversation also turned to artificial intelligence. Rogan also raised concerns about jobs being wiped out, but Vance said that the bigger issue is how AI-driven wealth will be distributed. Comparing the moment to the Industrial Revolution, he warned that if gains flow only to a small elite, inequality could deepen. “The fundamental challenge of AI is it’s going to unleash a lot of wealth creation,” Vance said. “But if that wealth creation all goes to some segment of people, you’re going to have communism.”
Mark Zandi’s ‘warning’ for Americans
Recently, Moody’s Analytics top economist, Mark Zandi also raised a warning for Americans. Zandi said that America’s stubborn inflation problem is not a mystery but it’s the result of deliberate policy decisions. In a breakdown shared via a post on X (formerly known as Twitter) Zandi noted that inflation has run above the Federal Reserve’s 2% target for 64 straight months, with headline inflation at 3.5%. He also wrote that when you ‘net out the inflation tailwinds and headwinds, it’s clear the uncomfortably high inflation is the result of policy choices’. Zandi also said that the Americans are right to view high inflation and the increasing cost of living as their biggest financial challenge, and he argues that the roots of the problem lie in trade and immigration policies that have reshaped the economy.“Most Americans consider persistently high inflation and the resulting higher cost of living their number one financial problem. With good reason: top-line inflation is running no less than 3.5%, well above the Fed’s 2% target. And inflation has been well above target for five years running. The table breaks down last year’s inflation and this year’s expected inflation into their underlying factors. Netting out the inflation tailwinds & headwinds, it’s clear the uncomfortably high inflation is the result of policy choices,” wrote Zandi.
