NEW DELHI: Police scrutiny of 2,873 people present at and around the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protest at Jantar Mantar has found that 989 individuals had previous criminal records.These records included cases of murder, robbery, rape, kidnapping, offences against women, illegal arms and narcotics, according to official sources.The verification exercise was conducted following the July 20 “Sansad Chalo” protest, during which clashes broke out between protesters and police.More than 200 police personnel and 65 protesters were injured in the violence, while protesters alleged that security forces used pellet guns against peaceful demonstrators, news agency ANI reported.According to police records, 101 of those screened had previously been booked in murder cases, 62 in attempt-to-murder cases, 284 in robbery and dacoity cases, 229 under the Arms Act, 135 in snatching cases, 67 under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 61 in rape cases, 25 in cases related to outraging the modesty of women, 19 in kidnapping cases and six under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.Officials said the exercise was aimed at identifying individuals with criminal antecedents who were present during the agitation and formed part of the broader investigation into the violence.The scrutiny also indicated that several of those identified were repeat offenders, ANI reported.Among those linked to murder cases, 42 had two or more criminal cases registered against them, while 12 had criminal histories involving 10 or more cases. Of the 62 people linked to attempt-to-murder cases, 25 had multiple criminal cases.Similarly, 155 of the 284 individuals previously booked in robbery and dacoity cases had two or more criminal cases, including 31 who had histories involving 10 or more cases.Police also found that eight of the 61 people linked to rape cases, six of the 25 booked for offences against women, and nine of the 67 accused in NDPS cases had multiple criminal records.As part of the verification, district police units also examined 216 criminal dossiers. The highest number of dossiers came from West district (26), followed by Northeast (23), South (22), Central (21), Southwest (18), Southeast (17), East (15), New Delhi (14), Shahdara (12), Outer North (11), North and Rohini (nine each), Northwest (eight), Outer (six) and Dwarka (five).Police said the findings will assist investigators in identifying individuals requiring further verification as part of the ongoing probe into the July 20 violence.(With agency inputs)
