From Tololing to Tiger Hill: Five mountain victories that secured India's Kargil triumph over Pakistan

The Kargil War of 1999 was not won in a single battle. It was secured through a series of hard-fought victories across some of the world’s most unforgiving terrain, where Indian soldiers climbed near-vertical cliffs under enemy fire at altitudes exceeding 16,000 feet. Each captured peak altered the course of the conflict, weakened Pakistan’s defensive positions and brought India closer to reclaiming every inch of its territory.

Here are the five battles that proved decisive in India’s victory during Operation Vijay.

  • 1. Tololing: The breakthrough that changed the war

The Battle of Tololing marked the first major turning point in the Kargil conflict. Located in the Dras sector, the feature overlooked the strategically vital Srinagar-Leh National Highway (NH-1), India’s only road link connecting Kashmir with Ladakh.

Pakistani intruders had entrenched themselves on the heights, allowing them to observe and threaten movement along the highway. Repeated Indian assaults faced stiff resistance because troops had to climb steep, exposed slopes while under constant enemy fire. After weeks of fierce fighting, Indian troops recaptured Tololing on June 13, 1999. The victory not only restored control over a critical tactical position but also shattered the belief that the heavily fortified enemy bunkers were impossible to dislodge. The capture of Tololing boosted troop morale and paved the way for subsequent operations in the Dras sector, making it one of the most significant psychological and military victories of the war.

  • 2. Tiger Hill: The battle that broke Pakistan’s defences

If Tololing was the breakthrough, Tiger Hill was the defining victory of the Kargil War.Standing prominently above the Dras Valley, Tiger Hill provided commanding views of the surrounding region, including large stretches of the Srinagar-Leh Highway. As long as the peak remained under enemy control, Indian supply convoys remained vulnerable.Recapturing Tiger Hill demanded one of the most daring assaults in Indian military history. Soldiers climbed nearly vertical rock faces under the cover of darkness while artillery pounded enemy positions and the Indian Air Force provided support through Operation Safed Sagar. On July 4, 1999, Indian troops successfully captured Tiger Hill after intense close-quarter combat. The victory dealt a decisive blow to Pakistani positions in the Dras sector, severely weakening their defensive network and shifting the momentum of the war firmly in India’s favour.

  • 3. Point 4875: Captain Vikram Batra’s defining battle

Point 4875 in the Mushkoh Valley became one of the fiercest battlegrounds of the Kargil conflict. The feature overlooked critical supply routes and offered a commanding tactical advantage. Holding it meant controlling movement across the Mushkoh sector.Indian troops launched a determined assault to retake the position. Among those leading the attack was Captain Vikram Batra of 13 Jammu and Kashmir Rifles, whose extraordinary courage became one of the enduring symbols of the Kargil War.Captain Batra was killed in action while rescuing a fellow officer during the battle, for which he was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra. The peak was successfully recaptured on July 7, 1999, securing the Mushkoh Valley and denying the enemy one of its most strategically important positions.Today, Point 4875 is popularly known as Batra Top in honour of Captain Vikram Batra’s sacrifice.

  • 4. Point 5140: Clearing the path for victory

Point 5140 was another crucial objective in the Dras sector.Situated at a commanding altitude overlooking the Tololing axis, the feature controlled access to several neighbouring enemy positions. Unless it was recaptured, further advances by Indian troops would remain extremely difficult.Indian soldiers mounted a determined assault despite steep gradients and heavy enemy fire. The position was successfully recaptured on June 17, 1999, only four days after the victory at Tololing. Its capture removed a major obstacle in the Dras sector and opened the route for deeper operations against remaining enemy-held heights, helping sustain India’s offensive momentum.

  • 5. Khalubar: The battle that secured the eastern flank

While the battles in Dras attracted much public attention, equally fierce fighting unfolded in the rugged mountains of the Batalik sector. One of the most important objectives here was the Khalubar ridge, where Pakistani forces had established well-defended positions on steep, rocky slopes.Indian troops faced difficult climbs and sustained enemy fire before launching repeated assaults to reclaim the feature.Among the officers who displayed extraordinary bravery was Captain Manoj Kumar Pandey of the 1/11 Gorkha Rifles, who led his men in a series of attacks despite being seriously wounded. He continued fighting until the objective was secured and was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra. The capture of Khalubar effectively shattered Pakistan’s eastern defensive flank in the Batalik sector, allowing Indian forces to regain control over the area and further isolate enemy positions.Five peaks, one victoryEach of these victories represented far more than the capture of a mountain. Together, Tololing, Tiger Hill, Point 4875, Point 5140 and Khalubar dismantled Pakistan’s defensive network, restored India’s control over strategic heights and secured the Srinagar-Leh Highway.By the time Indian troops had reclaimed these positions, the outcome of the conflict had largely been decided. On July 26, 1999, India declared the successful completion of Operation Vijay, marking a victory achieved through extraordinary courage, sacrifice and determination in one of the toughest battlefields in the world.
