'Will take legal action': CJP firm on punishing cops who used excessive force

NEW DELHI: Cockroach Janata Party leaders on Saturday met Delhi Police commissioner Anurag Kumar after the protest against the NEET paper leak at Jantar Mantar was called off following education minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation and the fulfilment of the remaining demands. While speaking to reporters after the meeting, CJP spokesperson Saurav Das said they had made it clear that the party would take legal action against every official who used excessive force against students during the July 20 march.“There was no specific agenda for the meeting… The discussion took place in a very cordial atmosphere. Senior officers, including the Special Commissioner of the Delhi Police, were also present.

We made it clear to them that we have resolved to take legal action against every police officer and RAF personnel who was seen in videos or photographs using excessive force, and those who directly struck people on the head, causing head and hand injuries,” Das said.“We will initiate legal proceedings against all such police and RAF personnel very soon. We have also launched a website, and when we begin this legal action, we will not only file complaints but also seek the registration of FIRs. If necessary, we will also approach the courts. When the time comes, we will ensure that those officers who fail to uphold law and order and ensure the safety of the people are sent to jail,” he added.Meanwhile, Ashutosh Ranka said the party recognises the “consistent cooperation” of the police.“It was a good meeting. We discussed everything that has happened over the past few days. What happened on the 20th was very unfortunate. However, we also recognise that there had been consistent cooperation from the Delhi Police,” he said.“We acknowledged that as well. We hope this marks the beginning of a new chapter. All our demands have been accepted, including the withdrawal of the FIRs and the assurance that no new FIRs will be filed. All’s well that ends well, and we sincerely thank the youth of this country,” he added. This comes after the Cockroach Janata Party called off its 36-day agitation following Pradhan’s resignation and the government’s acceptance of its remaining demands. The CJP declared that it was withdrawing its agitation after the government agreed to all its remaining demands, including compensation for the families of students who allegedly died by suicide following the NEET paper leak and the withdrawal of FIRs against protesters. The announcement came after the third round of talks between the two sides at the Constitution Club of India, where Union ministers J P Nadda and Jitendra Singh met CJP representatives Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka.Addressing a joint press conference with the CJP leadership, Nadda said the government would provide “honourable compensation,” in accordance with the rules, to the families of students who died by suicide following the NEET examination controversy and ensure the withdrawal of all FIRs registered against protesters.
