20-year-old US student, army officer’s son, dies as car plunges into open drain in south Delhi | Delhi News
NEW DELHI: A 20-year-old student home from US was killed when the car he was driving overturned and plunged into an open drain in south Delhi’s Vasant Kunj early Friday.A young woman travelling with him escaped from the vehicle and survived.The victim was identified as Yashvendra, who recently returned to India and was staying with a friend in Delhi Cantonment area. His father is an Army officer posted in Kolkata.The accident took place around 6am near the Nangal Dewat drain. Police teams pulled the vehicle out of the drain and dragged out Yashvendra. He was taken to a hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.Police said because of rain the road where the car crashed was slushy. It might have caused the car to skid, hit a tree, overturn and fall into the drain, they said.The girl, in a statement to police, too, blamed the slippery road for the accident.The drain had no cover or retaining wall to prevent vehicles or pedestrians from falling into it.“Yashvendra was accompanied by his friend, a woman, who is also studying in the same business school as him in the US. They were coming towards Mahipalpur from a friend’s house in Vasant Kunj Enclave. It is suspected that he lost control of the vehicle when he took a sharp turn,” a senior police officer said.The vehicle belongs to the woman, but Yashvendra was driving. The woman was able to get out of the car as she was able to open the door on her side after the car fell in the drain. The officer said the man, however, was stuck inside and the roof of the vehicle also completely collapsed. The woman suffered minor injuries.A case has not been registered yet, police said.The circumstances that led to the crash, including the speed of the vehicle and whether any other factor contributed to the accident, are being probed. CCTV footage from the area is also being examined.
