Google-parent Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai mounted a robust defense of Google’s artificial intelligence (AI) strategy during the company’s earnings call on Wednesday, July 22, pushing back against investor fears that the search giant is trailing rivals following flagship model delays and setbacks in AI coding. Investor anxiety has reportedly mounted over Google’s decision to postpone Gemini 3.5 Pro, a model initially scheduled for a June release aimed at strengthening Google’s foothold in AI coding and autonomous agents. The delay has heightened concerns that Google is losing momentum while competitors like OpenAI, Anthropic, and several Chinese rivals rapidly launch new models.Addressing analysts on Q2 earnings call, Pichai adopted an unusually defensive posture when pressed on whether Google’s frontier models could continue to compete at the industry’s cutting edge. “We’ve had clearly frontier models. There are many attributes on which we are still at the frontier; there are areas where we’ve acknowledged we need to improve and coding and agentic coding is an example of that,” Pichai said in response to JPMorgan analyst Doug Anmuth, according to a Reuters report.

Sundar Pichai teases Gemini 4 release

Rather than focusing on the delayed flagship model, Pichai directed attention toward Gemini Flash, Google’s lower-cost “workhorse” model designed to power enterprise applications, data analytics, and customer service. He highlighted the newly released Gemini 3.6 Flash, noting significant performance gains on coding benchmarks alongside newly unveiled variants like Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite and Flash Cyber, while Gemini 3.5 Pro remains in partner testing.Looking ahead, Pichai teased the upcoming Gemini 4 release, describing it as a “very ambitious effort” trained on a substantially larger scale. He told Barclays analyst Ross Sandler that Google’s roadmap for Gemini 4 includes rolling out models “almost at a monthly cadence,” reiterating that the company remains “very committed and very confident” in maintaining its edge.Despite reporting a stark 82% surge in cloud growth — surpassing Wall Street estimates of 64% — Alphabet’s capital expenditures continue to draw scrutiny. The company raised its capex guidance by $15 billion to a range between $195 billion and $205 billion. Google is the first of the Big Tech companies to report quarterly results. Meta Platforms, Microsoft and Amazon follow next week.
