NEW DELHI: Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) and some opposition leaders on Wednesday criticised Chief Justice of India Surya Kant’s remarks after the Supreme Court declined urgent listing of a plea on police action during the July 20 student protest in Delhi. The criticism followed CJI Surya Kant’s remarks where he said, “Don’t waste our time,” while declining an urgent hearing on the plea. When the petitioner’s counsel referred to videos allegedly showing police atrocities on students, the CJI responded, “We are not interested in videos, we don’t have time to watch.”Cockroach Janta Party founder Abhijeet Dipke reacted with “????????????” on X to the CJI judgement, while its spokesperson Saurav Das criticised the court’s remarks, saying, “Our Supreme Court deserves better. Surya Kant ji must realise that so much arrogance is not good. Government of India must counsel him.”

Reacting to the observations, Aam Aadmi Party leader Somnath Bharti said the issue raised larger concerns about access to justice.

“Its a dangerous situation. If Honble CJI wont listen to such issues then who will listen? And this brings a larger question before the people of India, does a court have a choice to listen or not to listen issues against the people in power?? They may decide this way or that way but in my humble considered opinion, high court or supreme court is duty bound to give patient hearing to issues, as important as brutalities committed on Students yesterday,”he wrote on X.Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi reacted sarcastically with a one-word post: “Amazing.”

Thousands of students and young protesters had marched towards Parliament on July 20 demanding the resignation of Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan over alleged irregularities in competitive examinations. The protest turned violent after demonstrators attempted to breach police barricades. Security personnel used lathis and tear gas to disperse the crowd, with both protesters and police reporting injuries.Meanwhile, the CJP’s sit-in at Jantar Mantar entered its second month on Wednesday, with the organisation claiming that more supporters joined the protest overnight. These development come months after CJI Surya Kant, while hearing a separate case, had said, “There are youngsters like cockroaches, who don’t get any employment and don’t have any place in the profession. Some of them become media, some of them become social media, some of them become RTI activists, some of them become other activists, and they start attacking everyone.”
