CHENNAI: Police on Monday arrested Vilathikulam DMK MLA GV Markandeyan over alleged threatening and controversial remarks against Tamil Nadu chief minister C Joseph Vijay made during a public meeting in Kovilpatti.Videos of the speech have been circulating on social media, drawing criticism over the MLA’s remarks.Police reached Markandeyan’s residence in Vilathikulam early in the morning and took him into custody.Supporters of the MLA protested the arrest, raised slogans and attempted to block the police vehicle. Police removed the protesters before taking the MLA away.According to officials, Markandeyan was taken to the office of the superintendent of police for questioning and is expected to be produced before a court later.The arrest has triggered political reactions and created a stir in the area.
