Why did AJ Styles come back after retiring from WWE?
Avery Styles was competing at an Atlanta Wrestling Entertainment event when things quickly turned ugly. He faced GWC Jr. Champion Tristan Moody in a match for the title. Avery won the match by disqualification after one of Moody’s allies pushed him off the top rope. The situation became even worse after the match. More of Moody’s allies entered the ring and attacked Avery. With his son surrounded, AJ Styles suddenly appeared. The WWE Hall of Famer immediately stepped into the ring and started fighting off the attackers. Styles even attempted to hit a Styles Clash, but his move was stopped when one of the opponents was pulled away.Once the ring was cleared, AJ helped Avery back to his feet. The father and son then shared an emotional moment inside the ring. The appearance was surprising because Styles had already announced his retirement from in-ring competition. He faced Gunther at the Royal Rumble in January 2026 and lost the match. Styles then stepped away from wrestling and was later announced as part of the 2026 WWE Hall of Fame class. He has since taken on a different role in WWE. Styles has worked as a scout and has also been involved in coaching at the WWE Performance Center. However, AJ had previously admitted that there was one situation that could potentially bring him back. Speaking on The AJ Styles Show, he explained that wrestling alongside his sons could be meaningful enough to change his mind.“How long is it going to take my son, or sons, to get into a position where I’m able to do the show with them that matters? If it doesn’t matter…I’ll be honest with you, I’m probably not going to come back for an indie show, even if it’s to wrestle my boys. I’m probably not doing that. I don’t mind being a special guest like a manager, but if I do come back, hopefully I’m not 60 and it’s on a big show. What father wouldn’t want to come back and tag with his sons? I don’t know if that opportunity will come because it depends on how long it’s going to take,” Styles said. That makes his latest appearance even more interesting.Styles did not return for a scheduled match. He returned because his son was in trouble. The moment showed that his retirement from wrestling may not stop him from stepping inside the ring when Avery needs him.Avery, 19, is currently signed with TNA and is scheduled to make his in-ring debut at Bound For Glory 2026 in the Call Your Shot Gauntlet.
