NOIDA: A court order to pay his former wife Rs 15 lakh, mounting debts and more than Rs 30 lakh spent on the treatment of his prematurely born son are among the circumstances police are examining after software engineer Sambhav Jain, 28, died by suicide at Noida’s Supernova building on Saturday.Jain had paid Rs 7-8 lakh of the court-ordered amount and was due to pay the remaining sum the following month, according to Sector 126 SHO Sumnesh Kumar.His marriage had ended in separation a few months after the birth of his son. The child was born prematurely and spent about a month in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Police said Jain had borrowed money from friends and family to meet the treatment expenses, which exceeded Rs 30 lakh.Jain worked for a private company in Gurgaon and lived in IMT Manesar. Police are now examining his financial circumstances, conversations and movements in the days before his death.Court ordered Rs 15 lakh payment after separationAccording to Kumar, Jain’s former wife had been awarded Rs 15 lakh by a court, to be paid in two instalments.Jain had already paid around Rs 7-8 lakh and was expected to pay the remaining amount the following month.Police are also examining WhatsApp conversations between Jain and his father that involved money.“His father insisted he return home, but he refused. He said he would repay all the debts first,” Kumar said.Police are examining these conversations as part of their efforts to understand Jain’s circumstances before his death.Left home three days before deathJain left his home around three days before the incident and stayed at hotels at different locations, police said.He later checked into an Airbnb in Noida’s Supernova building at around 3pm on Friday. He was alone.He ordered food that evening.The following morning, a team of air-conditioning mechanics working in a nearby flat spotted Jain hanging from the balcony railing.The workers tried to persuade him to step back, police said. Jain allegedly told them he was “depressed” before jumping from the 41st floor.Police recover two videosPolice have recovered two videos linked to the incident.One was recorded by a resident on the 17th floor of another tower and shows Jain falling. The other was filmed by one of the technicians and captures the workers’ attempts to communicate with him.Police have inspected the scene and collected evidence from the building.Investigators are also examining CCTV footage from the Supernova building and surrounding areas to establish Jain’s movements before he checked into the Airbnb.His family has not filed a complaint, Kumar said.Police are continuing to examine his financial dealings, WhatsApp conversations and movements as they piece together the events leading up to his death.
