Russia's pneumonic plague scare: Nearly 200 quarantined after lab worker's death - all you need to know

Nearly 200 people have been placed under medical observation in Russia’s Irkutsk region after a laboratory worker died following severe pneumonia, with reports suggesting she may have contracted plague at a research facility in Siberia. Russian authorities, however, have not publicly confirmed that the woman died from pneumonic plague and have described the illness as a “particularly dangerous infection” and pneumonia of “unknown aetiology”.The case involves an employee of the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Research Institute in Shelekhov, near the regional capital Irkutsk, according to Russian state-run news agency TASS and reports cited by CNN. According to reports, the 27 or 28-year-old laboratory worker was admitted to a hospital in Shelekhov on Tuesday with severe pneumonia. She was placed on a ventilator and died on Thursday, according to reports cited by The Moscow Times.Reports said the woman may have accidentally broken a test tube containing live bacteria while collecting samples for testing. The circumstances of the alleged laboratory incident have not been independently confirmed.

What Russian authorities have said

Russia’s federal consumer and health watchdog Rospotrebnadzor said the worker had been diagnosed with “pneumonia of unknown aetiology”, indicating that the exact cause of the illness had not been established.According to CNN, Rospotrebnadzor said “the sanitary and epidemiological situation in the Irkutsk region, the cities of Irkutsk and Shelekhov is stable”.The agency said it had introduced specialised measures “in connection with the case of an employee of the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Institute”.Alexei Tsydenov, head of neighbouring Buryatia, said the woman had died from an unspecified form of plague, according to The Moscow Times. Earlier reports cited by CNN said Tsydenov described the possibility that she had died “possibly from the plague”.At the same time, Tsydenov stressed that “There are no plague outbreaks in the republic, including in areas bordering Mongolia”.Irkutsk governor Igor Kobzev also urged residents to remain calm after an emergency meeting involving regional authorities and Russia’s chief state medical officer.According to CNN, Kobzev described the meeting as being linked to a “suspected case of a particularly dangerous infection affecting a resident of the region”.

Nearly 200 people under observation

Authorities have stepped up precautionary measures around Shelekhov following the worker’s death.According to reports cited by The Moscow Times, at least 197 people who may have come into contact with the woman were placed under medical observation, with more than 100 reportedly in hospital wards. The Shelekhov district hospital was also placed under quarantine while a special commission assessed the situation. Reports also said isolation measures were introduced at at least one maternity facility in the municipality. An aluminium plant located near the research facility instructed employees to wear face coverings.Artem Fominikh, head of the Irkutsk Aluminium Plant, urged people to remain calm amid speculation, saying according to CNN that “there are many rumours and conflicting reports circulating”.“All identified close contacts are under medical supervision. At present, they show no signs of the disease, and their laboratory test results are negative,” Fominikh said, according to CNN.Kobzev similarly said on Telegram that “All identified contact persons have been placed under medical observation. As of today, the contacts show no signs of illness, and their laboratory test results are negative,” according to The Moscow Times.Authorities also reportedly cancelled planned public events in Irkutsk, while law enforcement opened a criminal investigation into possible violations of health and safety rules resulting in death.

Is it pneumonic plague?

The exact nature of the infection remains unclear based on the information released publicly by Russian authorities.Media reports have described the case as suspected pneumonic plague, while official statements cited by CNN have referred to pneumonia of unknown origin and a suspected particularly dangerous infection.Gennady Onishchenko, the former head of Rospotrebnadzor, said the pathogen was “most likely not the plague”. He also said that even if plague were confirmed, “there will be no spread of this disease”.Pneumonic plague is one of the three main forms of plague caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis. Unlike bubonic plague, which is commonly associated with infected fleas and animals, pneumonic plague affects the lungs and can spread from person to person through respiratory droplets, according to information cited by CNN and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.Symptoms can include fever, headache and weakness, followed by rapidly developing pneumonia, breathing difficulties, chest pain, coughing and, in some cases, bloody or watery sputum, according to the CDC information cited in the reports.

US monitoring suspected case

The United States is also monitoring reports of the suspected fatal case, according to a State Department official cited by Fox News. The official said Washington was aware of reports of a death in Irkutsk Oblast and was following the situation in coordination with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other federal agencies. The official stressed that many details remained unconfirmed and urged Russian authorities to provide accurate information quickly.Former CIA officer Dan Hoffman told Fox News Digital that the US intelligence community was likely collecting information from multiple sources about the incident.“I would also expect our embassy in Moscow to be engaging with their diplomatic counterparts at an official level because we might have people in Russia who might be at risk,” Hoffman said.“Washington will be speaking to all of our allies and partners in the region and sharing what we know.”The State Department official said pneumonic plague can be treated with antibiotics, particularly when treatment begins early, according to Fox News. The CDC recommends starting appropriate treatment as soon as plague is suspected.
