Anduril founder Palmer Luckey recently pushed back against a report that said two major US defence contractors would help lead a Pentagon project that could benefit them. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Palmer Luckey said he is advising the project in a personal capacity and rejected the description of Anduril as one of the US Department of Defense’s biggest contractors. The post soon caught the attention of Tesla CEO Elon Musk who replied to Luckey’s post, saying government defence revenue makes up only a small part of the total revenue of his companies.“Dept of War revenue for my companies is close to a rounding error of total revenue. Probably around 3% of SpaceX’s December ARR and ~1% of all my companies combined,” Elon Musk said.
Palmer Luckey says he is ‘not representing Anduril’
In the X post, Palmer Luckey was responding to a Politico report about Project Meridian, a Pentagon initiative looking at how warfare could change in the future. “Why are you lying?” Luckey wrote in his post adding “I am not Anduril, I am advising in a personal capacity.”Luckey also challenged the report’s description of Anduril as one of the Department of Defense’s biggest contractors. “Even if this was an Anduril project, it is nuts to call 67th place one of the Department’s biggest contractors.”He said the ranking was clear and questioned why the report had presented the information that way. “You know this isn’t true, but presumably you start your story with this false claim for a reason.”In the post, Luckey also shared a table showing defence contractor revenue rankings in his X post. The table showed companies such as Lockheed Martin and RTX among the biggest defence contractors, while Anduril was ranked much lower. Luckey used the ranking to support his argument that describing Anduril as one of the Pentagon’s biggest contractors was misleading.
What is Pentagon’s Project Meridian
Project Meridian is aimed at studying possible changes in future warfare. The project is linked to a commission led by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, with input from people including Palmer Luckey, Elon Musk and Newt Gingrich. The commission is expected to study future military and warfare trends and produce a report by January 2027.The project has raised concerns about whether people advising the Pentagon could benefit from future defence contracts.
