Lithuania airport shut, Nato jets scramble as ‘drone spotted’ along Belarus border
Vilnius airport in Lithuania was temporarily closed and Nato air-policing fighter jets were scrambled after a possible drone was detected flying from the direction of Belarus, Lithuania’s National Crisis Control Centre told news agency Reuters.Authorities advised residents in the Vilnius region to be prepared to seek shelter if necessary, it said. The incident comes as security concerns continue to rise across the Baltic region, where countries bordering or located near Russia and Belarus have reported a growing number of airspace incidents linked to the war in Ukraine.Lithuania is a Nato and European Union (EU) member and has been closely monitoring developments along its borders amid concerns about possible Russian aggression. Russia has rejected allegations that it is planning an attack on Nato, while Western officials have said Moscow does not currently have the capability for a direct assault. The development unflods as neighbouring Latvia prepares for a parliamentary election on Saturday, with security concerns featuring prominently in the campaign.Opinion polls have placed Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs’ centrist United List at around 14%, narrowly ahead of the overtly pro-Russian Sovereign Power. However, political fragmentation could make it difficult to form a government after the election.Kulbergs, a 47-year-old businessman and amateur rally driver, took office in May after the previous coalition collapsed over its handling of incidents involving military drones that entered Latvian airspace without being detected. The drones were Ukrainian, although Latvian officials blamed Russia for causing them to stray from their intended flight paths. The incident in Lithuania is likely to add to security concerns across the Baltics, where governments have remained on alert over airspace violations and the wider regional impact of the Russia-Ukraine war.
