The United States is pushing European countries to release diesel reserves as President Donald Trump considers restricting US exports of the fuel amid a tightening global market and surging prices.According to the BBC, Trump said he may ask European countries to release some of their diesel reserves as Washington weighs an export ban.Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has also urged European partners to make additional supplies available immediately, warning that American farmers, truckers and businesses should not be left bearing the burden of higher fuel costs.Trump said over the weekend that his administration was considering a diesel export ban “very seriously”, as the US seeks to keep more supplies within the domestic market and ease pressure on fuel prices.The move comes amid a wider global diesel shortage linked to disruptions caused by the war in Iran and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.The US is a major supplier of diesel to international markets, exporting between 1.2 million and 1.5 million barrels per day. Any restrictions on those exports could therefore tighten supplies in overseas markets and add further pressure to already elevated diesel prices.Why diesel is more sensitive than petrolDiesel is particularly sensitive to supply disruptions because it is closely tied to freight, agriculture, construction and other parts of the real economy.Trucks, tractors and heavy machinery depend heavily on diesel, making it harder for users to quickly cut consumption when prices rise. The American Petroleum Institute describes diesel as a key fuel for trucks, trains, ships, farming and construction, while noting that demand tends to remain relatively steady even when prices increase.The International Energy Agency said in its September 2026 Oil Market Report that diesel and gasoil exports from the Gulf and Russia were down by 1.6 million barrels per day in August compared with February, while global refining capacity remained under pressure.Reuters reported that the shift towards lighter crude grades in Asia during the Iran war reduced the production of middle distillates because those crude grades generally yield less diesel and jet fuel.This combination of high economic dependence, relatively inflexible demand and limited flexibility in refining output means a disruption to diesel supplies can translate into a sharper price response than consumers might expect from a similar disruption in crude oil alone.
