For millions of people, the Google homepage is part of the daily routine. For 18-year-old Kameirah Johnson, it became something much more personal when her artwork took over the search engine’s familiar logo and turned her idea into a nationwide celebration of identity, family and self-expression, states an online report by Geekwire. The Renton, Washington, student and Lakeside School senior has been named the winner of the 2026 Doodle for Google contest, beating thousands of entries from students across the country, adds the report. Her winning artwork is now featured on Google’s homepage, giving her work an audience far beyond the classroom.
A tribute to hair, identity and family
This year’s Doodle for Google theme asked students to complete the idea, “My superpower is …” Johnson answered with a concept deeply connected to her own experience: hair. Her winning piece, titled Hair Power: The Crown That Grows from Us, uses hair as a symbol of identity, heritage and inherited strength. The artwork shows three figures lying in grass, their elaborate hairstyles shaped like crowns, explains the online report.The figures are inspired by Johnson, her mother Simone and her sister Kalieyah. The composition reflects the importance of family in her creative vision and the role her mother played in helping her embrace her natural hair and cultural identity while growing up.Johnson’s artwork stood out among more than 10,000 submissions and earned her a place among the five finalists announced in April, states the report. Her final selection was revealed in the month of June during an appearance on the TODAY show in New York.
A scholarship and technology package
Winning Doodle for Google comes with more than national recognition. Johnson received a $55,000 college scholarship to support her next chapter, while Lakeside School received a $50,000 technology package. The prize arrives at a particularly significant moment for Johnson, who is preparing to leave Washington for college this fall, informs the online report.She will attend New York University, a school she has reportedly considered her dream college since she was 11. Her academic plans combine two interests that have shaped her ambitions: economics and studio arts. The combination reflects her broader interest in bringing creativity and business together. Eventually, she hopes to open her own gallery.
From the Google homepage to a bigger canvas
Doodle for Google is now in its 17th year and has become a major platform for young artists, giving students the chance to see their work displayed alongside one of the world’s most recognizable digital brands. Washington has produced several recognized entries in recent editions. Mahee Chandrasekhar of Redmond High School was the state’s winner in the 16th contest, while Bellevue’s International School student Rebecca Wu had her artwork recognized in 2023.
