At least 10 people have died and one remains missing after landslides triggered by continuous rainfall struck Nepal’s Baglung district over the weekend, burying homes and sweeping away several houses.A video of the incident shows a section of a mountain collapsing and rushing down the slope within seconds.Nine people died and one person was reported missing in landslides across Baglung on Sunday, while one person was killed in a separate incident on Saturday, according to local authorities.Superintendent of Police Phanindra Prasai, chief of the District Police Office in Baglung, said four deaths and one missing case were reported in Tamankhola Rural Municipality, while five people died in Nisikhola Rural Municipality on Sunday.In Tamankhola Rural Municipality-3, Dharnasuk, 80-year-old Buddhiraj Gharti and 66-year-old Bhimdevi Gharti were killed when a landslide buried their home. Eight houses were swept away in the village.In Tamankhola Rural Municipality-4, Santar, 50-year-old Hastabir Sripali and 65-year-old Udisara Sripali died after their house was buried. Hastabir’s wife remains missing.Four members of a family died after a landslide buried their home in Haddhara, Jugjakhola, in Nisikhola Rural Municipality-3. The deceased were identified as 36-year-old Shyamkumari BK, her 13-year-old son Manoj, eight-year-old son Mukesh and three-year-old son Nishan BK.In Nisikhola Rural Municipality-6, Rangil, 50-year-old Suryabahadur Gharti died after a landslide buried a cowshed.On Saturday, 59-year-old Manbahadur Roka was killed when a landslide buried a house in Dhasmar, Tarakhola Rural Municipality-5.
Rescue operations under way
Baglung chief district officer Krishna Prasad Acharya said early warnings helped prevent further casualties.A team of security personnel, supported by a Nepali Army helicopter, reached the affected areas to carry out rescue operations.The landslides in Baglung are part of a wider spell of severe weather across Nepal. At least 21 people have been killed, five remain missing and five others have been injured after four days of heavy rainfall, floods and landslides, according to an update from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA).Landslides accounted for 14 deaths and all five missing persons, while floods caused four deaths and continuous heavy rainfall claimed three lives, the authority said.The severe weather affected 247 families, completely destroying 260 homes and partially damaging 80 others. A low-pressure system originating in the Bay of Bengal brought heavy rainfall across several parts of Nepal between September 24 and 27.Emergency teams have relocated around 3,000 people from high-risk areas, while rescue personnel and local authorities are providing food and relief to displaced families. Helicopters have also been used to evacuate people trapped in hard-hit districts.NDRRMA monitoring stations recorded more than 100 mm of rainfall at 106 locations during the four-day period. Dumkuali in Nawalparasi recorded the highest rainfall at 455.2 mm, followed by Pokhara in Kaski at 407.2 mm and Anbu Khaireni in Tanahun at 373.2 mm.The authority has also warned residents living along the Narayani River after it crossed the warning level and entered settlements. Landslides have blocked or partially obstructed the flow of the Marsyangdi and Kali Gandaki rivers, prompting alerts for communities downstream.
