‘Illegal detention by Assam Police has finally ended’: CJP’s Ashutosh Ranka to address press | Guwahati News
GUWAHATI: Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) co-convenor Ashutosh Ranka on Sunday said his detention by Assam Police had ended and that he would address the media after being taken back to the spot where he was picked up.“The illegal detention by Assam Police has finally ended. We have asked police to go and drop us from where we were picked up in the first place. I will address the press at Chaudhary Tila, opposite the Secretariat, from where we were picked up,” Ranka said in a post on X.Ranka and several other CJP leaders and activists were detained in Guwahati on Sunday shortly before the organisation’s first regional volunteers’ meeting was scheduled to begin near the Assam Secretariat.CJP leaders said its senior leadership, including Ranka, Ankit Bhardwaj and Prem Aakash, along with Assam-based volunteers, were taken to a police facility in Guwahati.Police had blocked access to the proposed venue since morning, preventing volunteers from reaching the meeting site. The organisation had planned to bring together around 200-300 volunteers from across the region.The detentions came after the leadership of Akhil Gogoi-led Raijor Dal met CJP leaders, including Ranka, in Guwahati.Earlier, CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke had warned that he would travel to Assam with other party members if Ranka was not released.“Ashu was picked up by Assam Police from a private residence. They have still not been told under what charges or on what grounds he has been detained,” Dipke said in a post on X.Meanwhile, Assam Congress president and Deputy Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Gaurav Gogoi condemned the detention of CJP activists in Guwahati and questioned the BJP government in the state.“Why is the BJP so scared of the youth? Is the government terrified because the youth have rejected the BJP’s divisive politics of Hindu-Muslim polarisation?” Gogoi said.
