Seeing a dark curtain or shadow in your vision? Doctor explains why this strange eye symptom needs urgent attention
A dark shadow that seems to move across the field of vision can feel like a strange visual glitch. It may be tempting to blame tired eyes, long screen hours or a poor night’s sleep. But when that “curtain” appears suddenly, the eye may be sending an urgent warning.World Retina Day, observed on the last Sunday of September, highlights the importance of recognising retinal problems early. One symptom deserves particular attention: a sudden curtain-like shadow or dark patch in the vision.
When a shadow is more than an eye strain
“Every so often, a patient describes something that sounds almost too strange to be real. A dark shadow creeping in from one side of their vision, as if a curtain were slowly being drawn across the eye,” said Dr Akhilesh Yadav, Cataract, Cornea & Refractive Surgeon, Dr Agarwals Eye Hospital, Dombivli.According to Dr Yadav, this can be a classic warning sign of retinal detachment, when the retina separates from its normal position at the back of the eye.The National Eye Institute explains that retinal detachment is a medical emergency.
Why the retina matters so much
The retina is a light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye. It helps convert light into signals that the brain interprets as vision.When the retina detaches, the affected area can no longer function normally. Without prompt treatment, the detachment may spread and cause permanent vision loss.As Dr Yadav explained, “Once this happens, the affected part of the retina stops receiving proper blood supply and stops working.”
The curtain may not come alone
A curtain or shadow is not always the first clue. Some people notice a sudden shower of floaters, tiny dots, strands or cobweb-like shapes. Others see flashes of light, blurred vision or a gradual loss of side vision.The NHS also lists sudden floaters, flashes and a dark curtain or shadow among the warning signs requiring urgent assessment.That combination matters. A few long-standing floaters can be harmless, but a sudden change is different.
Why waiting until morning can be risky
“Anyone experiencing these signs, particularly alongside a shadow or curtain, should treat it as an emergency and seek care the same day,” Dr Yadav said.There is no reliable way to tell at home whether the problem is a retinal tear, retinal detachment or another eye condition. An eye specialist may need a dilated retinal examination, and sometimes imaging or ultrasound, to identify the problem.
Treatment can protect sight
Retinal detachment is treatable. Depending on the problem, doctors may use laser or freezing treatment for a retinal tear, or surgery when the retina has detached.“Retinal detachment is treatable, often successfully, but outcomes depend heavily on how quickly it is diagnosed,” Dr Yadav said. “When the central retina is still attached at the time of surgery, the chances of preserving good vision are far higher than when treatment is delayed.”The National Eye Institute notes that treatment is ultimately successful for about 9 in 10 people, although some need additional treatment.The important message is simple: a sudden curtain over vision is not something to sleep on.
