A library card is becoming an unexpected money-saving tool in US; one Chicago-area library partnered with local businesses for discounts, while Brooklyn added 150,018 cardholders through August, up 16% from 2 years earlier

A library card is becoming an unexpected money-saving tool for Americans, as public libraries expand beyond books and offer access to free entertainment, technology help, community services and, in some places, discounts at local businesses. In Glenview, Illinois, a Chicago suburb, the local library partnered with businesses during September’s Library Card Sign-Up Month to offer special deals to cardholders. Offers included discounts on purchases and services, with one deal offering 10% off wine and another providing a free month of robotics classes, according to Fortune. The initiative comes as Americans continue to deal with rising household costs. Consumer prices were up 3.4% over the previous year, according to data cited by Fortune, making free or discounted services increasingly attractive to households looking to reduce spending. But the savings available through a library card extend well beyond local business promotions.

More than books

Many US libraries now give cardholders access to digital services including ebooks, audiobooks, movies and television content through platforms such as Libby and Hoopla. That can provide an alternative to paid entertainment subscriptions. Fortune cited a CNET survey that found Americans spend an average of $111 a month across streaming services.Libraries are also increasingly offering practical services that could otherwise cost money. Carolyn Bennett Glauda, programs and outreach manager at the Southeastern New York Library Resources Council, told Fortune that librarians are being trained as “digital navigators” to help visitors with technology. That can include helping people use video-calling services, create resumes, navigate devices or troubleshoot accessibility features. Some libraries have also introduced repair programmes, allowing residents to bring items such as clothes, lamps, jewellery and toys for repair rather than replacing them. Others provide access to food distribution programmes and community spaces where people can spend time without having to buy anything.“The things that are bringing people into the library are changing,” Glauda told Fortune.

Brooklyn sees card registrations rise

The growing range of services is also coinciding with increased interest in library memberships in some US cities. The Brooklyn Public Library recorded 150,018 new card registrations through August 2026, according to a library spokesperson cited by Fortune. That was 16% higher than the number recorded during the same period two years earlier.Glenview Public Library also reported an increase. It had added 2,656 new cardholders as of August 31, an 8% increase from the previous year, according to information provided to Fortune. The library also reported a 38% increase in circulation of audiobooks, movies, ebooks and TV streaming content, suggesting that the demand is not limited to physical books.Glenview’s own website confirms that it was running a “Show Your Card and Save” programme during September as part of National Library Card Sign-Up Month.

Could library use signal financial pressure?

The renewed interest in libraries has raised a broader question: could increasing library use be an early sign that households are feeling financial pressure? There is some historical evidence for a connection, but it is not conclusive.A 2022 study published in Public Library Quarterly found that visits and checkouts per person at 541 highly rated US public libraries increased modestly, but significantly, during the Great Recession, Fortune reported.Library card ownership also reached 68% of Americans in August 2008, according to a Harris Poll commissioned by the American Library Association at the time. However, another study published in The Library Quarterly in 1985 found no significant relationship between local economic conditions and library use, although registrations increased with unemployment under some measures. That makes library membership an imperfect indicator of economic conditions. Increased sign-ups could reflect financial pressure, but they could also result from libraries expanding their services or people seeking free community spaces and alternatives to digital entertainment.Fortune also pointed to another possible factor: younger Americans’ growing interest in “analogue” activities and spaces that provide a break from screens.

The library as a free third space

Libraries are increasingly serving as what urban planners and sociologists often call “third spaces”, places outside homes and workplaces where people can gather without necessarily having to spend money. That role has become particularly valuable as many traditional entertainment options become more expensive. For cardholders, the benefit can now include far more than borrowing a novel. Depending on the library, one membership may provide access to digital entertainment, technology assistance, community programmes, repair events and local discounts. The model varies from one library system to another, so not every cardholder will receive the same benefits. But the expansion reflects how public libraries are adapting their services to changing needs. In Glenview, the library’s September partnership with local businesses effectively turned the card into a local discount pass. In Brooklyn, meanwhile, more than 150,000 new cards had been registered by the end of August. Those numbers do not establish that the US is heading toward a recession. They do, however, show that library memberships are finding renewed relevance at a time when consumers are paying closer attention to what they can access for free. The humble library card, once primarily associated with borrowing books, is increasingly becoming a way to access entertainment, services and community resources without adding another monthly bill.
